Unification Church head Sun Myung Moon dies in South Korea: officials

SEOUL (Reuters) - Sun Myung Moon, founder and head of the Unification Church with millions of followers around the world, died at a retreat near the South Korean capital Seoul on Monday, church officials said.

Moon was 92 and had suffered complications from pneumonia, said the officials.

He carried on an active public life until recently, officiating a mass wedding for 2,500 in March and leading a service of more than 15,000 followers in July.

Moon has handed over day-to-day operations of the church, which has its headquarters in Seoul, to one of his sons and the management of the Tongil Group with interests in construction, resorts, travel agencies and a newspaper to another son.

Roddick beats Fognini to postpone retirement

NEW YORK (AP) ? Knowing full well each match could be his last, Andy Roddick is putting on a show while soaking up every moment along the way.

So when he pounded a forehand passing shot to seize a 20-stroke point Sunday, Roddick thrust both arms overhead, motioning to the full house of U.S. Open spectators to make even more noise. Moments later, after hitting a winning volley, Roddick wagged his right index finger while chugging back to the baseline.

Channeling his inner Jimmy Connors, Roddick is having a grand ol' time at his retirement party ? and he's not done yet.

Winning a second consecutive match since announcing the U.S. Open will be the last tournament of his career, 2003 champion Roddick stuck around at least a little longer by getting past 59th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy 7-5, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 in the third round Sunday.

"I'd be an idiot not to use the crowd right now. It's a huge advantage," Roddick said. "Each match is almost like it's another memory."

What comes next could really be memorable. In the fourth round Tuesday, the last American man to win a Grand Slam title will face 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9) in an all-Argentine match that featured one particularly noteworthy point. In the tiebreaker, Mayer smacked a backhand that somehow ricocheted off the top of a net post and landed in the court ? but del Potro was unfazed, got the ball back and wound up winning the point.

"I'm going to have to serve well, kind of try to rush him a little bit," Roddick said about del Potro. "When he gets into a groove and has time, he'll put a hurt on the ball."

Looking ahead himself, del Potro wasn't about to get too sentimental about Roddick's impending departure from tennis.

"I know this is special, this day, for him, but I'm doing my job," said the seventh-seeded del Potro, whose major trophy is the only of the past 30 that wasn't won by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

"The crowd loves Andy here," del Potro said, "and they have respect (for) me."

Djokovic, the defending champion, beat No. 31 Julien Benneteau in straight sets and will meet No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka for a quarterfinal berth. Also advancing: No. 4 David Ferrer, who got past two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and now meets No. 13 Richard Gasquet, who eliminated two-time NCAA champion Steve Johnson 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3; and No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, who will face the winner of Sunday night's last match between No. 9 John Isner of the United States and No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

In women's action, Maria Sharapova got back to the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time since winning the 2006 title, taking control of a back-and-forth match after a 75-minute rain delay and beating No. 19 Nadia Petrova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 on Sunday night.

Sharapova will play No. 11 Marion Bartoli, the 2007 Wimbledon runner-up, who came back to defeat 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat 73rd-ranked Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time. Azarenka has dropped only 10 games through four matches heading into a showdown against defending champion Sam Stosur, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain, whose breakthrough run included wins against past major champions Kim Clijsters and Li Na.

Robson beat Clijsters in the second round Wednesday, sending the 29-year-old Belgian into retirement. It was the next day, Roddick's 30th birthday, that he surprisingly let the world know he had decided to walk away from the sport whenever this visit to Flushing Meadows ends.

Sunday just so happened to be five-time U.S. Open champion Connors' 60th birthday ? and on the very same date in 1991, Connors celebrated his 39th by coming back to beat Aaron Krickstein in five sets to reach the quarterfinals in New York, a match replayed often during rain delays in more recent times. Connors, who later briefly coached Roddick, was at his rabble-rousing, crowd-goading best on that day 21 years ago; in one of those nice twists, Roddick was in New York then, a kid who was treated to tickets as a present to celebrate his ninth birthday.

"That was my first taste of live tennis, and it was that run," Roddick recalled, "so that's as good as it gets."

He and Fognini provided their own brand of entertainment, even though Roddick is not at his best because of an aching right shoulder. A couple of months ago, Roddick lowered the tension in his racket strings so he could, he explained while pointing to that shoulder, "get a little sling action in it and help the old Hamburger Helper here."

Asked how that key part of his body feels, Roddick said: "It's not great. But, you know, it's good enough. I've got, max, a week of tennis left, so it's good enough for that."

An element of Roddick's appeal, in addition to an ability to play tennis well enough to reach five Grand Slam finals and get to No. 1 in the ATP rankings, is his showmanship and quickness with a quip.

Dealing with a series of injuries, Roddick dropped out of the top 20 in February, then slid to No. 34 in March, his lowest ranking since 2001. A balky right hamstring forced Roddick to retire during his second-round match at the Australian Open in January, and he lost in the first round at the French Open and third round at Wimbledon.

The 20th-seeded Roddick certainly won't be favored against del Potro. But Roddick is into the fourth round for the ninth time in 13 appearances in the U.S. Open, and he's 8-0 so far.

"He benefits from playing at home," said Fognini, who hugged his good pal up at the net after losing and asked for one of Roddick's shirts as a memento.

"If I really force myself to pick a winner, I'd give del Potro a 51 percent chance, because he is playing well and he's confident," Fognini said. "But on the other hand, Roddick wants to end his career on a high note."

Fognini is a real character, too, and he conjured up one tremendous, full-sprint, back-to-the-net, between-the-legs shot; after Roddick replied with a lunging volley winner into the open court to end the point, Fognini chucked his racket all the way to the service box.

"That's about as cleanly as you can hit a between-the-legs passing shot. He hit the thing from Jersey and almost won the point," Roddick said. "That was fun."

There was more, including when Fognini stuck his mug right up against a TV camera after one point; requested instant-replay challenges of two faults on another (both serves were, indeed, out); and kept up a stream of sailor-language muttering in Italian.

Roddick appeared sluggish at times, and his big serve ? he once owned the record for fastest, at 155 mph ? wasn't always what it can be. Fognini, who at 5-foot-10 is four inches shorter than Roddick, actually wound up with more aces, 15 to 10.

"I was surprised; he's one of the best servers in the world," Fognini said.

The key came in the second-set tiebreaker, when Fognini took the first point, and Roddick the rest.

At 1-all, Roddick really came alive, as did the partisan group in the stands, when he smacked a winner and gestured vigorously.

"I played that point perfectly. It was so pretty, it should have been framed," Fognini said with a smile, "and he ruined it with a down-the-line passing shot that was crazy."

Roddick followed that with a pair of aces at 126 mph and 131 mph and pretty much was on his way.

There was the third-set blip, of course, but otherwise Roddick stayed steady, breaking Fognini twice in a row in the fourth and raising his clenched right fist overhead after going up 4-3.

After Fognini missed a backhand return on match point, Roddick rolled his head back and raised both arms overhead, then swatted a ball into the stands.

Roddick answered the fans' standing ovation with one of his own, clapping overhead while standing near the middle of the court. When he sat in his changeover chair, Roddick exhaled a couple of times, taking it all in.

"You're kind of smiling, humming, whistling, walking around, and you feel pretty good about it. All of a sudden, you have to say good bye to someone. It's like this gut-check moment. It's these extreme emotions from five minutes to the next five minutes," Roddick said, describing the past few days. "You think you know what's going on, but I don't think there's any way to prepare yourself for it."

What Is Digital Marketing? - Internet Marketing Guide

What Is Digital Marketing? A Guide to Marketing in Today?s Digital World

In the world of business development and branding, going digital is all the buzz. So just what is digital marketing and how can we use it to grow our businesses?

Digital Marketing Defined

Digital marketing is the advertising and promotion of businesses and their brands through digital media channels. Digital media, at the moment, includes websites, social media, radio, television, mobile and even forms of traditionally non-digital media such as billboards and transit signs. Essentially any marketing media that is delivered electronically is considered digital marketing.

This leaves only various forms of person-to-person (P2P) marketing, print advertising and direct marketing outside of the digital marketing umbrella. Even then, print ads, direct mail, print directories, billboards and posters are all starting to connect to their digital counterparts. With items like URL landing pages, QR codes, web banner advertising, online directories and text codes, traditional marketing and advertising almost always has a digital marketing connection.

Why the Focus on Digital Media?

The shift to digital media is being driven by marketing agencies, business owners and consumers alike. The ever-increasing demand to show quantifiable results makes going digital a dream for the digital marketing agency. Most digital media, including websites, social media and mobile advertising is much easier to track than traditional marketing media such as print advertising.

For business owners, many forms of digital advertising are very low cost. Having a web presence, engaging customers in conversations through social media and e-mail marketing are low cost alternatives to print advertising and direct mail. These digital channels are available to businesses of any size, and help to even the playing field for start-ups, small businesses and independent consultants seeking new business.

For consumers, the fast pace of life makes digital advertising a must. When consumers are in need of goods and services, gone are the days of thumbing through a phonebook to find them. Now, we whip out our mobile devices or head to our computers for answers ? and we find them fast.

Using Digital Media to Build Your Business and Brand

No matter what size your business is ? large or small to medium sized business / enterprise (SMB or SME) ? you can effectively market your business through low-cost digital channels. The foundation of your marketing efforts will be your website. Invest wisely in your website, and be sure that it does the following:

Adequately represents your business and brand (look and feel, messaging)
Adequately speaks to your target audience
Can be found by searchers on top search engines
Is up-to-date and easily navigable
Provides multiple channels for customer communication
Connects to other marketing efforts

It is recommended that you work with a professional web design firm that is skilled in web development and search engine optimization. Because your website is the foundation to and from which all other digital channels will lead, it should be considered one of your top business investments.

Once you have your website complete, the next steps would be to launch regular monthly or bi-monthly e-mail campaigns, and connect with customers via social media. If you are truly on a shoestring budget, these are efforts that can be done in-house (by someone with the proper knowledge) or for a low cost by an outside digital marketing agency. Be sure that all of your efforts lead customers back to your website where they can fully engage with your business, products and services, and choose the channels through which they contact you.

If you?re interested in getting aggressive with search marketing, you can set aside some digital marketing dollars for search engine optimization and pay-per-click advertising. Many businesses today rely heavily on being found online to gain new customers. A common misconception among business owners is that simply having a website means that customers will find it. Not so. Your site must be built with specific key words and phrases, meta data, page content and linking strategies that will help it reach top search rankings.

Because many key words and phrases have stiff competition for top search rankings, you will need to supplement your organic search engine optimization efforts with pay-per-click advertising. Getting established with pay-per-click advertising campaigns can be a little daunting, but with a little time, effort and instruction, that too can be accomplished in-house, or for a reasonable cost through an outside digital marketing agency.

Beyond e-mail, social media marketing and search engine marketing, you can venture into a host of other digital marketing efforts. Mobile advertising, radio, television, electronic billboards and much more are available as marketing outlets. Whatever digital efforts you choose, they should all connect and tie into your foundation ? your company website.

If you have the means, a wise investment would be to engage the services of a digital marketing agency to assist in your marketing efforts. Today, many digital agencies offer multiple levels of service to accommodate businesses large and small.

Digidaze is a digital marketing agency in Maryland that offers digital marketing services to small to medium sized Maryland businesses. We are a full-service digital marketing agency in MD providing a host of in-house digital marketing agency services.

Spain's Debt Buyer Of Last Resort Becomes Seller In Scramble To Fund Deposit Outflows

Several days ago we reported that Spanish financial institutions suffered the largest deposit outflow on record in the month of July when a whopping EUR74 billion, or 5% of the country's entire asset base, picked up and left, the bulk of it most likely taking the well-known path of least resistance to the safety of Swiss and German bank vaults. We showed how this looks visually, and as the chart below confirms it can be summarized in one word only: waterfall.

And while in isolation this news was bad enough, a far more troubling implication arises when one considers that in Europe's financial Ice-9 world, in which the interbank market has been dead for over a year, and where the ECB is the shadow lender of only resort, providing funding via various repo channels to local banks to fund Spain's deficit by purchasing sovereign bonds in the primary market. To wit: since the entire financial system's liabilities (deposits) just declined by a record EUR74 in one month, since the consolidated balance sheet has to balance, either Spain's (thoroughly insolvent) banks had to generate EUR74 billion in shareholder equity in one month, i.e. profits - a prospect which is rather amusing considering Spain's banking system recently officially demanded a European bailout, or banks had to sell a like amount of assets in order to fund this outflow. Naturally, they chose the latter. The problem is that the security they sold is the one which only the banks have been buying recently in order to preserve the illusion that Spain is solvent. It was Spanish sovereign bonds.

Reuters reports:

Spain is beginning to lose the support of its banks as last-resort buyers of government debt, with lenders selling out of their holdings at the fastest pace in more than two years in July, ratcheting up pressure on the European Central Bank to step in and put an end to the country's burgeoning debt crisis.

?

The sales are a blow to Madrid, which was increasingly reliant on domestic banks to buy its debt after an exodus of foreign investors. Domestic lenders, under political pressure to support the sovereign, used cheap loans from the ECB to buy an extra EUR87bn of debt between December 2011 and March this year.

?

But that support has begun to ebb, with Spanish banks selling over EUR17bn of debt since then, according to ECB data. In July alone, domestic lenders reduced their holdings by EUR9.3bn, in part to meet an outflow of deposits, signalling that money is now too tight to support the sovereign.

?

...

?

Spanish banks are facing problems of their own. Data released last week showed that customers withdrew EUR74bn of deposits in July alone - equivalent to 4.7% of total deposits and the biggest monthly outflow since records began. Since June last year, clients have withdrawn EUR233bn, or 13% of the total then.

?

A need to raise cash to meet those withdrawals may have prompted the recent bond sales, as other assets owned by banks - mainly loans and mortgages - are far less liquid. Spanish bank bond holdings are dominated by Spanish government debt, but also include those of other countries.

Furthermore, as the chart below shows, the supreme irony is that Draghi's biggest enemy in the fight to preserve the illusion of Spanish solvency, is Spain itself, and specifically its depositors, whose bank jog suddenly becoming a sprint, is the worst thing that Spain, and the ECB, can possiby face. Indeed, since Draghi's "whatever it takes" speech, Spanish bonds have roundtripped and are now virtually unchanged. The primary culprit? Spanish banks forced to sell the bonds they bought in the primary market.

As a reminder, while Mario Draghi is furiously trying to come up with a bond buying plan that is endorsed by Germany, Buba and Weidmann, all of whom have, to date, said, "9-9-9", regardless of what the final construct is, whether it includes the ECM, EFSF, and/or ECB buying bonds directly, the key distinction is that no monetary authority can buy bonds in the primary market, as that is a direct breach of Article 123/125, and absent a thorough revision of the Maastricht Treaty, investors will dump as soon as the ECB starts breaking the rules unilaterally. Certainly bonds can be monetized in the secondary market, but someone has to buy them from the government. And if Spanish banks are unable to stem the deposit outflow, there is simply no practical possibility for banks to be buying SPGBs in the primary market even as they are forced to dump them in the secondary market.

In other words, the ECB may or may not surprise next week, but unless the Spanish public is convinced its banks are safe, and the remaining EUR1.5 trillion in Spanish deposits do not explicitly remain within the Spanish bank system, anything Draghi does will be for nothing.

Finally, add to this the surge in Spanish bad debt, which as we reported recently soared to an all time high: NPLs which will have to be provisioned for with cash-hungry charge offs, and one can see why suddenly from a perfect summer, Spain may head straight into the perfect storm.

Spanish loan delinquencies bad and getting worse in a hurry...

And with the August vacation now in the rearview mirror, here is why should the deposit outflows persist, Spain may have a problem or two funding itself now that the peak of its gross issuance is upon us:

  • 6 September: Spain auction. Bonds
  • 18 September: Spain auction. Bills
  • 20 September: Spain auction. Bonds
  • 25 September: Spain auction. Bills
  • 4 October: Spain auction. Bonds
  • 16 October: Spain auction. Bills
  • 18 October: Spain auction. Bonds
  • 23 October: Spain auction. Bills

Graphically, supply is set to rise significantly in September and October for Spain:

And even if all works out in 2012, it is all downhill from January 1, 2013. As UBS explained:

Even assuming that the Spanish Treasury sticks to its original funding plan of EUR 86bn, the Tesoro will need to continue to sell around EUR 6bn of bonds per month. Monthly net issuance should average nearly EUR 3bn. Moreover, gross issuance could potentially rise to around EUR 8bn per month and total net issuance could reach EUR 13bn if Spain adjusts for the increased net-borrowing requirement.

?

Considering that Spain usually carries out two auctions per month, this would imply an average issuance of around EUR 4bn per auction. The last time Spain was able to sell such an amount at a single auction session was in early March. Monthly supply has ranged between EUR 5-6bn since April (we exclude the first three months of 2012 when Spanish supply was largely supported by the two 3Y LTROs). Since that time, Spanish banks? capacity to absorb new government paper has deteriorated.

?

In our view this should continue to keep Spanish bonds under pressure each time supply approaches, making Spain very vulnerable to a possible loss of market access should other adverse domestic economic factors or events cause demand to fall even further.??

?

Spain?s situation is even more worrisome when looking at next year?s funding requirements.

?

In 2013, Spain will need to refinance around EUR 60bn of maturing Bonos and Obligaciones while issuing an additional EUR 45bn to cover its public deficit. In this analysis, we assume that the government?s targets for next year are reached. This amount needs to include the funding for the deficit of local administration since regional issuance is unlikely to resume next year. Similarly, the central government very likely will need to cover the EUR 15 billion of Spanish regional debt maturing in 2013, which as it stands now cannot be otherwise refinanced. Additional central government funding may also need to be provided for maturing Spanish international and agency debt such as FADE bonds for a further EUR 3-4bn.

?

All in all, the total amount of gross bond issuance from Spain in 2013 could be in excess of EUR 120bn. That is around 40% higher than this year, 10-20% higher than in 2009 and almost four times larger than the average amount of Spanish bond issuance recorded in the previous four years.

Oops.

Perhaps at this point the only thing that can save Spain now that the 1 month respite from reality is over, is fast forwarding straight to the Christmas break, and the inevitable LTRO X, which the ECB will have to do in order to provide additional funding to Spain, which unlike before, however, will no longer work as Spain and the rest of Europe, are out of eligible collateral, meaning the ECB will have to get the Buba to agree to even more last minute rule changes to keep Spain "solvent."

Texas Insurance Expert Says Hurricane Isaac Should Make Every ...

Source: Insurance Agency Texas

Katy, TX, September 02, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Texas flood insurance specialist says Hurricane Isaac should be a warning for homeowners and businesses to purchase flood insurance.

Frank Hursh, owner of Katy, Texas based Insurance Agency Texas (http://insuranceagencytexas.com) said home and business owners in Texas and the Gulf Coast should not wait until there is hurricane heading towards the region to look for flood insurance.

?Now is the best time to buy flood insurance. If home and business owners wait until there is hurricane in the gulf, it is too late. Not only will it be very expensive to buy flood insurance then, you may not be able to find an agent willing to sell them flood insurance then,? he said in his office earlier today.

Reacting to the flooding in New Orleans, Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states, Hursh said damages from flood can run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for individual homeowners and businesses.

?Look at what is happening with Hurricane Isaac in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. So many homes and businesses are flooded. Texas residents and businesses need to learn from that and purchase flood insurance today,? Hursh said in Katy Texas.

?This is not the time to procrastinate. Not having flood insurance can be very costly,? he added.

Hursh also reminded Texans that flooding can occur even when the home or business is not in the flood zone.

?Flooding can happen to you whether you are in the designated Federal Flood Zone or not. Flood insurance covers flooding no matter the cause. Besides the building, flood insurance also covers the contents and replacement cost,? Hursh added.

Regular homeowner insurance does not cover flooding and individuals and businesses without flood coverage have to bear the cost of repairs and replacement.

?Many people mistakenly believe that the U.S. government will take care of their financial needs if they suffer damage due to flooding. The truth is that Federal disaster assistance is only available if the President formally declares a disaster. Even if you do get disaster assistance, it's often a loan you have to repay, with interest, in addition to your mortgage loan that you still owe on the damaged property,? Hursh said.

Katy, TX based Insurance Agency Texas has offices in Katy, The Woodlands, Houston, Fulshear and Round Rock, Texas.

The company has been helping customers purchase the best flood insurance coverage for their homes and businesses for decades. They are available at (281) 398-1010, toll-free (877) 952-1010 or on the web at http://www.insuranceagencytexas.com.

Cilic ends Nishikori's bid at US Open

Asian hopes for a Grand Slam singles crown at the US Open ended Saturday as Croatian 12th seed Marin Cilic ousted Japanese 17th seed Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 to reach the last 16.

Cilic, whose eight career titles include crowns this year at Queen's and Umag, advanced to a fourth-round match against the winner of a later match between French 32nd seed Jeremy Chardy and Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

"I served well. I think that was the key," Cilic said. "He played really well in the tie-breaker. We both had a lot of chances in the match."

Nishikori failed to match his best US Open run into fourth round from 2008, when he was beaten by Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, who also beat him in last month's Olympic quarter-finals.

"The whole day I didn't hit my serve well," Nishikori said. "I should have gone inside. It worked in the third set but I stepped back in the fourth. He made a lot of balls. I was running side to side. It was a tough match for me."

Nishikori's best Grand Slam run was into the quarter-finals at this year's Australian Open, where he lost to Andy Murray, who also ended Cilic's best Slam run in the 2010 Australian Open semi-finals.

Cilic pulled even in their career rivalry, having won their first meeting in the first round at Indian Wells in 2008 but lost in a gruelling five-setter in the second round of the 2010 US Open and again last year in Chennai.

Nishikori, the highest-ranked man in Japanese tennis history, won his only ATP title in 2008 at Delray Beach, Florida, in only his sixth tour start. He hopes to keep his ranking high now that the tour is Asia bound.

"I want to keep my ranking top 20 end of the year," Nishikori said. "I have to defend a lot of points. I'm going to be on the Asia tour for one month so it's going to be more comfortable for me -- Kuala Lumpur, Japan, Shanghai."

Cilic, 23, won the first seven points of the match. Nishikori hit a forehand wide to surrender a break in the second game, missed a break chance in the third and two more in the seventh before dropping the first set in 43 minutes.

"It was really crucial to start the match like that," Cilic said. "Kei played really well. We both had a lot of chances."

Nishikori, who retired in the first round at last year's US Open with a back injury, was broken at love in the ninth game of the second set and Cilic then held at love to seize command of the match.

But Nishikori, 22, battled into a third-set tie-breaker and dominated it, winning six of the last seven points to claim the 82-minute set when Cilic sent a backhand wide.

Nishikori denied Cilic on a break chance in the second game of the fourth set but Cilic broke with a forehand winner for a 3-1 lead and held serve to the end to win after three hours and 33 minutes.
