Destroying drug cartels, the mathematical way

Killing drug lords gets headlines, but complexity analysis suggests they are the wrong people to target to bring down a cartel

WHEN the Mexican navy announced on 9 October that Heriberto Lazcano, leader of the country's most violent criminal cartel, Los Zetas, had been killed it was hailed as a major victory in the war on drugs. But it's doubtful that Lazcano's death will be the end of Los Zetas - or reduce violence in Mexico. After all, there is already a new leader.

More useful targets might be those apparently minor players with key connections, according to a complexity analysis approach that could help Colombia - the world's largest producer of cocaine - investigate and prosecute cartel members.

Complexity analysis depicts drugs cartels as a complex network with each member as a node and their interactions as lines between them. Algorithms compute the strength and importance of the connections. At first glance, taking out a central "hub" seems like a good idea. When Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was killed in 1993, for example, the Medellin cartel he was in charge of fell apart. But like a hydra, chopping off the head only caused the cartel to splinter into smaller networks. By 1996, 300 "baby cartels" had sprung up in Colombia, says Michael Lawrence of the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation in Canada, and they are still powerful today. Mexican officials are currently copying the top-down approach, says Lawrence, but he doubts it will work. "Network theory tells us how tenuous the current policy is," he says.

Now Colombian prosecutors have a new tool to add to their investigation methods: network analysis. This can be an integral part of the modern war on drugs, says Eduardo Salcedo-Albaran, director of the Vortex Foundation based in Bogot?.

Vortex uses network-analysis algorithms to construct diagrams for court cases that show the interactions between cartel members, governors and law enforcers. These reveal links that are not otherwise visible, what Salcedo-Albaran calls "betweeners" - people who are not well-connected, but serve as a bridge linking two groups. In Mexico and Colombia, these are often police or governors who are paid by the cartels.

"The betweener is the guy who connects the illegal with the legal," says Salcedo-Albaran. Because many cartels depend on their close ties with the law to operate successfully, removing the betweeners could devastate their operations.

It's a reasonable strategy, says Michael Kenney of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, although it shouldn't be the only one governments use. The ideal strategy depends on government goals. If it is the end of the drug trade they are after, removing the leaders may work. But if the goal is to reduce violence, as incoming Mexican president Enrique Pe?a Nieto has vowed to do, targeting kingpins like Lazcano will have the opposite effect, says Vanda Felbab-Brown of the Brookings Institution in Washington DC. Smaller organisations that emerge from a broken cartel tend to assert their power by torturing and killing people.

Fighting all these factions would require even more firepower. Sean Gourley, of the data analysis organisation Quid in San Francisco, used public data from nine recent insurgencies, including Colombia's drug war, to determine mathematically how these battles play out (Nature, doi.org/bv2tf5). "Unfortunately, if you put more forces on the ground, you elongate the violence," he says.

Data collected by the Transborder Institute in San Diego, California, supports this. Prior to the crackdowns that began in 2006, drug-related crimes in Mexico killed about 3700 people per year. In 2011, that number was more than 16,000.

"People keep saying that the violence [in Mexico] will get worse before it gets better, and the cartels are at the end of their lives, but those predictions have been going on for years," says Lawrence. At some point, he suggests, a more mathematical approach will win out.

Lost your cartel? Just Google it

Mexican cartels aren't subtle about their whereabouts. To intimidate their rivals and the government, they advertise their latest crimes through the media and threaten each other on blogs and websites.

But this practice has been revealing their inner workings to Viridiana Rios and Michele Coscia of Harvard University. In a paper that will be presented at the CIKM conference in Hawaii this month, the two created a program called MOGO that searches Google News for references to the different cartels, their locations and their influence between 1999 and 2011.

They used MOGO to construct a map showing where all the cartels were working at each point in time. Their map turned out to be quite accurate, correlating closely with those developed by the global intelligence firm Stratfor.

The cartels' movements reveal a lot about their business strategies, says Rios. Some, such as Los Zetas, are very aggressive, expanding quickly into new territories and competing with rivals. Older organisations such as Sinaloa prefer to strengthen their own territories rather than seek new ones. Understanding the cartels' logic might make it easier to predict their movements, Rios says.

Aereo starts streaming TV to Mac and Windows web browsers

If you'd wanted to watch Aereo's unique antenna-to-internet TV streaming until today, you had to tune in from an iOS device or Roku box. That's not a lot of choice for placeshifting, is it? A fresh update to the company's streaming service has widened the choices considerably for New Yorkers to include all the major browsers on Macs and Windows PCs. As long as you're using a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera or Safari, you can catch up on Ion or Telemundo while you're checking email. About the only restrictions left are the continued lack of Android support and occasional lawsuits from traditionalist broadcasters.

Going Thermonuclear with Online Security | SiteProNews ...

Back in the 1950s, when the Cold War was raging, governments and individuals took the threat of nuclear war so seriously, they started building and stocking bomb shelters should the threat of nuclear war ever rear its ugly head.

Fast-forward 60 years and a new threat has appeared that is every bit as serious and potentially as disastrous to good people worldwide. Yet this threat has not yet galvanized the nation the way the threat of nuclear holocaust did back in the ?50s.

What I?m talking about is the impending threat of cyber attack.

When your head hits the pillow at night, do you fall asleep feeling that your online data, your identity and your financials are safe and secure?

Do you feel invulnerable behind your Windows firewall and Norton Antivirus? Are you in the habit of downloading freeware on your laptop and free apps on your Smartphone? Do you use public Wi-Fi at coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and airports?

If your answer to any of the above was ?Yes? then I have news for you, Bunky. It isn?t a matter of if you are going to be hacked, cracked or cyber attacked. It?s just a matter of when.

The habits evinced above are tantamount to an invitation for hackers and cyber criminals to gain access to your most sensitive information, hijack your computer and Smartphone and, in short, turn your life into a living hell where your identity, your financial data and your intellectual property can be bought and sold like a commodity.

Does this scenario sound far fetched?

Let me provide you with a news flash. During the past several months, a shocking number of financial institutions, government agencies and the world?s largest domain registration service have all been hacked or denied service in one form or another. Worse yet, all of these mammoth edifices have layer upon layer of protection that was designed to thwart even the most concerted attack. Yet their security proved unable to stop hackers from entering and controlling their systems.

An organized cybercrime group is in the process of recruiting the operators of illegal botnets to participate in a coordinated attack on 30 American banks, according to security vendor RSA.

The attack, which is apparently planned for an undisclosed date this fall, would likely be the largest coordinated cyber attack in history, involving as many as 100 botmasters and their respective botnets.

According to RSA, the group will leverage a proprietary Gozi-like Trojan, which RSA calls ?Gozi Prinimalka.? The word ?Prinimalka,? which is derived from the Russian word meaning ?to receive,? appears as a folder name in every URL path to the gang?s servers.

Apparently this was the same group that, in 2008, stole more than $5 million from bank accounts in the U.S. Botnets are networks of robotized computers owned by businesses or individuals that have been hacked and turned to cybercrime by remote control. Many times, the hacker tool of choice is not to spend hours or days trying to guess passwords, but simply to piggyback a piece of malware onto a freeware package that most people are all too eager to download. Some exploit known back doors to operating systems and public networks.

Once inside a laptop, PC, tablet or Smartphone, the malware or spyware can gain access to and, in some cases, take control of infected machines. Unless this malicious software is detected and eliminated, then the person or persons who designed the malware can rifle through your files, detect and extract credit card information and, if desired, use your machine to abet their nefarious activities.

We Have Met the Enemy and They are Us

Sad to say, but the biggest threat to cyber security to individuals and businesses comes from poor online discipline.

Former White House CIO and cyber security expert Theresa Payton pointed out in a recent televised interview that: ?In one instance we had a client that was convinced they were being bugged by a competitor. We quickly determined that their employees were checking in on Foursquare everywhere they went. Even worse, they revealed online who they were with, and what they were doing. So I told management that nobody needed to bug their offices. All the competition had to do was follow them around on Foursquare.?

This problem is not relegated to the U.S.

Andy Prow, New Zealand managing director of Aura Information Security sums it up: ?There is a growing need for privacy. More people are putting more information about themselves online ? Facebook and other profiles ? but on the flip side we are becoming far more conscious that we only want our personal information given out if we give it, and we do not want it stolen.?

Is Your Smartphone Smarter Than You?

Unlike PCs and laptops, most Smartphones have little in the way of security. According to a recent survey, 70 percent of users don?t password protect their Smartphones. Many Smartphone users have little or no antivirus software or malware eradication software installed on their phones. And unlike PCs and laptops, it?s all too easy to misplace or lose a Smartphone that, if left unsecured, has a 90 percent likelihood of being rifled through before being returned.

While no one, not even the government and large corporations are immune from cyber attacks, the most pressing need is for individuals to take the matter seriously and to take appropriate countermeasures to defend themselves.

Below are the top five things you need to do to protect yourself:

1. One layer of cyber security is not sufficient to detect malicious software. You need to have at least three layers of security to harden your system. As well as using a primary antivirus package such as TrendMicro, Norton, or McAfee, you should also add a secondary layer of malware detection such as IOBit?s Advanced system Care 9, and/or Malwarebytes Anti Malware.

2. Install password and antivirus protection on your Smartphone. AVG antivirus, Lookout Security, Dr Web Antivirus and other security and anti-malware programs are available for iPhone and Android.

3. Online you should always look a gift horse in the mouth. Never plug in a flash drive or install a free software program with which you are unfamiliar. If you are looking for software that you can rely on as being malware-free, check out the ratings on CNet or Tucows. Paying for a program in most cases eliminates the adware that often come with the free programs. Buying that app you like can help protect your Smartphone.

4. Do not respond to online come-ons or e-mail addresses to which you are unfamiliar. Phishing is all too common to be ignored and it is much more insidious than you think. I had to explain to a colleague the other day that the reason she was getting tons of e-mails but no follow up calls from a Craigslist ad she recently ran was due to the high probability that her ads were being responded to by people phishing for active e-mail addresses that can be sold to spammers. She has since insisted that interested parties phone her for more information.

5. Use common sense when posting on social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, FourSquare and Flickr. Remember while it may only take you a few moments to post online, your words and images will be available for years to come. Therefore, it is likely that employers, officials, spammers, stalkers, and identity thieves could call up your posts.

While the age of information warfare is not as daunting a threat as thermonuclear annihilation, it can be crippling to a business or governments, as Irani officials found out to their chagrin after having their computers compromised by the Stuxnet virus in 2011. They found out the hard way that online security is not something you can take lightly.

McDonald's sues Milan over eviction from Galleria

MILAN (Reuters) - McDonald's has sued the city of Milan for 24 million euros in damages over being kicked out of a tourist-packed shopping arcade, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, after the U.S. fastfood chain had rented the space for 20 years.

A second Prada store will replace McDonald's in the 19th-century marble-floored shopping mall as a result of a public tender whose terms McDonald's called "unfair."

To celebrate the last days of one of its busiest restaurants in Italy, McDonald's offered free burgers, fries and drinks to over 5,000 people from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

"We wanted to say goodbye to the Galleria with a smile," said Paolo Mereghetti, head of communication at McDonald's in Italy.

Losing the spot in the Galleria, which links the city's historic Duomo cathedral to La Scala Opera house and is close to the chic Montenapoleone shopping street, would cause a 6 million euro loss in missed annual sales, said Mereghetti.

"No jobs will be lost as a result," he said.

In a show of affection, 1,500 people left messages on a Facebook page set up in early October to comment on the closure.

"I will miss it because from now on I can no longer eat my favourite Miami fries admiring the spectacular Vittorio Emanuele arcade," Catia Fiorentino wrote on the website.

Vanuatu - Vanuatu media reject threats over reporting PM?s debt

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (RNZI) --- The Media Association of Vanuatu (MAV) says it won?t be cowered by threats of stringent legal controls on local media by the caretaker Prime Minister?s political advisor, Richard Kaltongga.

Kaltongga has criticised what he describes as irresponsible reporting about the exclusion of Sato Kilman?s name from the list of election candidates.

The caretaker Prime Minister was initially omitted from the list by the Electoral Commission over an outstanding US$140,000 debt to the government.

The Association?s President, Evelyn Toa, rejects Kaltongga?s claim that local media reported incorrectly on the story, calling his criticism political propaganda.

?Our investigation shows that the caretaker Prime Minister owes the people of Vanuatu 13 million vatu (140 thousand US dollars) and we have proof, we have evidence, and he cannot use politics to humiliate or intimidate our journalists, said Toa.?

Obama out to seize momentum from Romney in debate

(AP Photo/David Goldman)

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) ? Republican White House challenger Mitt Romney conferred with his debate practice partner while President Barack Obama exercised before his final study review for Tuesday's debate, both hoping it would help them pull ahead in the razor-tight race.

"I feel fabulous," Obama told reporters on his way into a meeting with top aides after three days of intensive "debate camp" at a Virginia golf resort. The pressure was especially high on the Democratic incumbent after even he admitted he lost the first debate two weeks ago.

Romney smiled broadly as he exited his plane in New York, where his second chance to face off with the president was scheduled at Long Island's Hofstra University. Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a constant companion in recent days as he played Obama in practice sessions, crouched in front of Romney's seat for much of the flight. They later joined aides in their hotel's auditorium for final preparations.

The candidates will take questions on domestic and foreign policy from an audience of about 80 of the coveted uncommitted voters whom both campaigns are so furiously courting with just three weeks left until Election Day. The town hall-style format makes it especially tricky for Obama to strike the right balance in coming on strong against Romney without turning off the audience ? and tens of millions of television viewers ? by going too negative.

The Campaign 2012 juggernaut has raced ahead nonetheless: Both sides have unfurled new ads, hustled at the grassroots level to lock down every possible voter, dispatched surrogates to rev up enthusiasm and kept the running mates busy raising cash and campaigning in the most hotly contested states.

Romney political director Rich Beeson laid down a marker that Romney would be victorious in one of the most aggressively fought contests ? Ohio. "To be clear, the Romney-Ryan campaign will be victorious in the Buckeye State," Beeson said in a memo written with the campaign's Ohio director, Scott Jennings, arguing that several factors are working in Romney's favor there. No Republican has ever won the presidency without carrying Ohio, where polls show Obama running strong.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and a top Romney supporter, wouldn't go as far as Beeson and predict a GOP win in Ohio.

"I can draw a scenario where Mitt Romney can win without Ohio, but it's a very, very difficult path," McCain said in an interview with The Associated Press while campaigning in Ohio for Romney. "And so I think the eyes of the world will be on Ohio and, from the polling that I see ? and this is obviously a very dynamic situation ? we could be up late."

With both candidates preparing for the debate and Vice President Joe Biden attending former Senate colleague Arlen Specter's funeral, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only member of either ticket out campaigning. He was taking a swing through Virginia. In an interview with Virginia's conservative radio host John Fredericks, Ryan said supporters working to get out the vote for the GOP ticket "have been just really doing the Lord's work all throughout the state."

He later campaigned in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, arriving for a Lynchburg rally in a pick-up truck with a large American flag flapping behind in the cab as AC/DC's "Rock 'N Roll Train" blared.

Ryan said the election "is about what kind of country we are going to be, what kind of people we are going to be. That's what this is about."

Romney picked up the backing of former independent presidential candidate H. Ross Perot. "We can't afford four more years in which debt mushrooms out of control, our government grows and our military is weakened," Perot wrote in an editorial announcing his endorsement Tuesday in the Des Moines Register.

Obama's campaign turned to former President Bill Clinton on Tuesday to make the case against what it says is Romney's $5 trillion tax cut. Clinton appears in a Web video for the campaign, picking apart Romney's tax plan piece by piece, saying his approach "hasn't worked before and it won't work this time."

The president's campaign says Romney hid from his tax proposal during the first debate, and pledged Obama would be more aggressive in calling out his rival's shifts on that and other issues this time around. Clinton, who has been praised by Democrats for explaining Obama's economic arguments more clearly than the president himself, appeared to be laying the groundwork in the video released hours before the second faceoff.

The president plans to cast an in-person ballot in Chicago on Oct. 25 ? making history as the first incumbent to vote early. First lady Michelle Obama dropped her Illinois absentee ballot in the mail Monday. The president later joked that he appreciated her support. "Thank goodness!" he said Tuesday after his morning workout.

Obama did not respond to a question about a more serious matter developing. Secretary of State Hillary Rodman Clinton said she takes responsibility for security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where four Americans were killed last month. Obama wouldn't say Tuesday whether he agreed she was to blame.

Romney pressed the White House on the matter last week after Biden said in the vice presidential debate that "we weren't told" about requests for extra security at the consulate. But State Department officials, testifying before Congress that day, said they were aware of those requests. Clinton backed up the White House's assertion that the issue didn't rise to the president or vice president's attention.

Obama's campaign, seeking to improve some of the optics that reinforced his poor performance, planned to send several elected Democratic officials to the "spin room" to speak with reporters immediately after the debate.

The campaign only had a handful of Obama advisers in the room after the first debate. Because those same advisers also had to meet with the president after the event, they showed up noticeably later than the Republican officials promoting Romney.

Their late arrival reinforced the notion of a campaign struggling to comprehend the president's lackluster performance.

Tuesday's debate audience of uncommitted voters was selected by the Gallup Organization. Moderator Candy Crowley of CNN will choose who gets to speak, after reviewing proposed questions to avoid repeats.

The final debate of the campaign will be Oct. 22 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., focusing on foreign policy.

Report: Apple to release 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display this month

11 hrs.

If rumors are to be believed, Apple will announce a smaller version of the iPad???potentially dubbed the "iPad Mini"???on Oct. 23. But that's not all the Cupertino-based company will show off at the end of the month, one report suggests. A 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with Retina display may be on its way.

According to?9to5 Mac's Mark Gurman, this detail comes via?a "consistently reliable source at a high-profile U.S. retailer."?This source reportedly?explains that the new 13-inch MacBookPro with Retina display will be "sold in two configurations, with differing processors and storage, and will be available for purchase soon after introduction."

As with the 15-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple will continue offering both a Retina display version of the 13-inch laptop alongside the regular non-Retina display models.

Gurman's source isn't the only one suggesting that a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is coming soon, of course.?According to CNET's?Brooke Crothers, DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim?has been making the same claim for a while. He speculated that the new laptop will be a 13.3-inch device and have a 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display, which would make it comparable with the 15.4-inch model (with a?2,880 x?1,800 pixel display) which was unveiled in June (see video below).

No word regarding pricing, but Shim suggests that the new laptops will likely be priced a bit more affordably than their larger siblings.

Obama witch doctor display to stay, creator vows

The calendar is flipping toward two big late-fall events: Halloween and the presidential election.

A business owner has married the two in his New Jersey storefront. His anti-Obama, Halloween-themed window displays the president as a witch doctor.

Expression of free speech? Maybe. But also a bad business decision, apparently.

The voodoo storefront has evoked outrage in the beachfront community of Spring Lake, N.J. But Bill Skuby, 66, owner of the local men's store, Skuby & Co. Lifestyle Clothing, insists that the display is not political. ... "It's personal."

The store's window display depicts an image of Obama's head superimposed in the body of a witch doctor that rests atop the word "Obamacare." The witch doctor image is placed under a tombstone epithet that reads, "I Told You I Was Sick," accompanied by a photo of the president in a doctor's coat and stethoscope.

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com.

On the tombstone stands an Obama bobble-head doll sporting a long-sleeved tee that reads, "Hoax," and underneath that is a zombie mannequin rising from the dead wearing a hat that says "F.Y.B.O.," an acronym apparently for an expletive phrase denouncing the president.

"This whole thing started as a statement from an individual voicing his opinion," Skuby told ABC News during a phone conversation that was briefly interrupted when someone from the street came in to give him a piece of their mind. "Now it has brought total negativity to Spring Lake."

The display has generated both outrage and support, ABC News' New York City station WABC reported.

"Our children and grandchildren can walk by, and I think this represents the worst that America can display in campaigning," said Spring Lake resident Suzanne Herrmann.

But Ray Miller told WABC's Jen Maxfield, "Good for [Skuby]. Someone has to stand up for our country."

The Halloween-themed display debuted Oct. 4. Skuby said that he did a similar one last year "and no one said a word. But this is an election year and now, suddenly, everyone wants to be involved."

The store owner said he has received a wave of threats from all over the country aimed at him and his six children, including death threats that he has reported to the police.

"This is America, isn't it?" Skuby asked. "Aren't we able to say and do pretty much what we want to do?"

Skuby, who admitted that his business has suffered because of his visual expression, said the community is trying to run him out of town. He said people have made him out to be a racist because of his anti-Obama display.

"If you want to call me a racist then go ahead. I can assure you I am not a racist; I just really want to see Obama go." Skuby said. "This is a good example of where race relations are under this guy's administration. ... This has absolutely nothing to do with race."

Skuby said that if Mitt Romney had the same plan as the president; his picture would be in the window.

Skuby said he isn't taking the display down until after the holiday.

"My window is my voice and I get one shot to have my voice be heard." he said. "I don't regret putting up the display. At some point, you have to take a stand and that is what I am doing. I want Obama out."

Yeah, that stuff Aaron Rodgers was saying the other day about his own play not being up to par?

    Never mind.

Rodgers was back to MVP Rodgers, and he dragged the Packers back to looking like champions along with him.

He was laser-sharp while carving up the Texans 42-24 Sunday night, completing 24-of-37 passes for 338 yards and six touchdowns, the same amount the Texans had allowed in their 5-0 start. (Watch the highlights here.)

And it wasn?t as if Rodgers stood back with clean pockets all day.

He stood in and took shots and delivered passes, he scrambled for first downs and more when plays broke down. He read through progressions, and found guys who weren?t the first choice.

In short, he was Rodgers again.

And as long as that?s the case, the 3-3 Packers are as good if not better than any team in the NFL.

Here?s another thing: They?re without their best wideout in Greg Jennings, although Jordy Nelson is quickly making that a debate. And a guy with bad hands (James Jones) has caught multiple touchdowns in three straight games.

Those things don?t happen in a vacuum, or with anything short of the best quarterback in the game throwing it to them.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

    1. The Texans didn?t look like the undefeated team that really hadn?t been pushed.

    Or maybe they did.

The Texans were able to beat five teams by an average of 15.2 points per game coming into this one, and it might not be an accident that all five were AFC teams.?In fact, the toughest of the lot might have been the Jets game, and the Jets can play a physical style you see more often in the other conference.

But from Connor Barwin trying to play buck-buck like Fat Albert on a field goal, to Danieal Manning trying to punch out from the bottom of a pile, the Texans played without much composure, which doesn?t bode well for the games that matter in January, when somebody else might punch back.

    2. It?s not exactly breaking news to say that J.J. Watt is having a phenomenal year.

But with two more sacks, pushing him to 9.5 in six games, it becomes more amazing with each passing week.

A 3-4 defensive end is simply not supposed to do be able to do this. The job description, as originally written, doesn?t come close to what Watt is capable of doing. Ends in the 3-4 are supposed to contain the run, be solid and clog lanes for outside linebackers to make the glory plays.

It?s not like a receiver leading the league in rushing, but it?s at least the equivalent of a tight end leading the league in receiving yards, and speaks to his singular talent.

    3. The Packers can?t keep inside linebackers healthy, but that doesn?t cover up the fact that one of them is playing very well.

Desmond Bishop was lost for the year with a preseason hamstring, and his replacement D.J. Smith left the game with a knee injury after a suspect block by Texans left tackle Duane Brown.

But the other Packers inside linebacker, A.J. Hawk, has been more than just solid of late, playing very well against the run.?The Packers (who were also missing nose tackle B.J. Raji) held Texans running back Arian Foster to 22 yards on 13 carries in the first half, when the run game was a viable option.

Hawk has taken a lot of criticism, and it?s easy to make a case that he?s overpaid. But he?s played well when the Packers needed him most.

    4. One other quick note on the Brown hit on Smith.

The Texans have now ceded the moral high ground, and can no longer complain about linebacker Brian Cushing?s season-ending injury from a block of similar intent by Jets guard Matt Slauson.

You can?t have it both ways, fellas.

A wise man told me once there?s a difference between innocent and righteous. Just because it wasn?t flagged doesn?t make it right.

    5. The Texans spent a lot of money ($48.75 million for five years) on cornerback Johnathan Joseph, and they?re? not getting a return on their investment lately.

There was no injury reported during the game, but he came out for a few plays for backup Alan Ball.

The Texans struggled last week in the secondary against the Jets, and if they were playing a team with actual receivers (and more of a quarterback), it might have cost them then.

It caught up with them Sunday night.

Joseph is a good cover player, but his two-week lapse is noticeable, and something they can?t afford.

Is Your Company Invisible Online? Try These Internet Promotion ...

Is Your Company Invisible Online? Try These Internet Promotion Tips!

As long as you?re operating an online business, then you should be trying a few internet marketing techniques to bring people to your virtual doorstep. You will bring in plenty of new customers in ways that are only possible online. You can learn ways to make use of this marketing technique by reading this article.

A great Affiliate marketing tip is to become an expert in the field you are dealing with. This will help you gain credibility since you will have a lot of correct information. If you claim you are an expert and you are not, most people will be able to see through your dishonest claims.

You might find it beneficial to offer your customers an annual subscription for the products or services you offer. For example, if a customer purchases some toner, you can offer them a subscription to buy more toner at a discounted price every few months.

It is most important to gain your customers trust and maintain their trust. Be sure to back up all claims with clear facts. Present client testimonials, test results, and expert endorsements that could be proven if needed.

You can use the power of viral videos to draw vast numbers of people to your website. If you want to get millions of people to visit your website, you must engage in out-of-the-box brainstorming to create your viral video. This extra traffic will make your business really take off.

Offer information your customers can use if you want to build an online following. A simple page with details on your hours of business will not attract as many customers as a larger website would. Build up your website with useful content, interesting reviews and other things that shows your visitors that you know what you are doing and that you are not just a fly by night presence.

A strong website presence is essential for successful Website marketing. Be sure to test your website on a regular basis and eliminate bad links, broken graphics or glitches that might show up. Visitors who cannot use your site correctly cannot purchase anything.

Personalize whatever you put out to your email contacts. Many people are weary of getting endless impersonal email messages. How do you feel about getting bulk emails? If you create a personal experience in email you will stand out form the rest.

Encouraging your customer to get emotionally invested in your product/service can be a powerful Website marketing tactic. Encourage your reader to visualize their life and how much easier it would be when they use your product. Any advertising copy must read like customers are enjoying the benefits of a product, all while reading the copy.

Give yourself an impressive title so that people will show you respect. You could for instance be the CEO of your small business. If you do not own your business, find a creative title that evokes authority and power. List your title after your name on emails.

To gain potential customers, think of having a $1 promotional sale for new clients. This will build a ton of buzz for your business. People will want to put more of your products in their cart if they find the site to their liking. Above all, you need to be very confident in what you?re selling to people.

Providing lots of content is important for an effective Internet marketing campaign, but you should bear in mind that it?s critical to let customers retain full control over how much information they get from you. There is so much unsolicited information and spam advertising flying around the Internet that it?s all too easy to fade into the background by sending too much to your customers. Always offer an opt-out option; this helps to create a relationship built on trust and respect.

Establish opportunities on your website for customers to chat with one another. By doing this, you are helping foster community so your business becomes more than a product seller. People enjoy being a part of a group and this will give them a good reason to keep visiting your site.

Use tech tools to help measure how many visitors become customers to help improve your marketing strategy. Many of the bigger online companies have tracking meters available that will show you the precise number of visitors in comparison with buyers and repeat visitors.
These web analysis products are designed to suit a number of uses and easily integrate with you sites per-existing software.

Whatever claims you make in your website advertizing, make sure you can back it up with facts. It?s common for people to not trust advertising copy. Credibility is key; augment your sales pitch with support like references, customer testimonials and fact-based evidence. If you don?t have proof, customers will shop elsewhere.

Details matter when it comes to your website. One important design feature is to place the website name to the right at the top of each page and give a descriptive line beneath. This will help your visitors understand your site no matter where they end up.

This can be a rare exception to the rule of not mixing personal life with business. Without the pressures of a traditional job, this instance could be considered a means of profiting from a hobby. Do it together with your partner, and see how it goes.

Words like ?limited? add a sense of urgency and uniqueness to your advertisement. When people shop online, it is because they are sisck of the brick and mortar stores. They want something new and fresh. By marketing limited edition products, consumers will be more likely to quickly purchase it before you don?t carry it anymore.

Now that you read the article above, you should be aware of many new ways to interact with consumers through Website marketing. It?s also a great way to communicate with existing customers. This technological interaction is new and still evolving. If you sue the strategies described in this article, the possibilities are available for your success in Website marketing
