Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's new president, is sworn in

Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first freely-elected president in history, today took the oath of office, marking a pivotal moment for a country wracked by over a year of political upheaval.?

Morsi, standing before the nation's Supreme Constitutional Court in a ceremony broadcast live on state television, stated: "I swear by Almighty God that I will sincerely protect the republican system and that I respect the constitution and the rule of law," reported Reuters.?

More from GlobalPost:?Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's new president, defies military rulers

"Today, the Egyptian people laid the foundation of a new life ? absolute freedom, a genuine democracy and stability," he told judges, according to the Associated Press.

The new Egyptian president was sworn in before the court instead of the parliament after the legislative body was dissolved over legal issues earlier this month.

The?move was quickly followed by a push for greater control by Egypt's ruling generals, ushering in legal changes that severely limited the powers to held by Morsi,?the Arab world's first freely elected Muslim president,?according to AP.?

In a rebellious move, Morsi took the exact same oath on Friday in front of massive crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of opposition activity that ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak, telling them they "are the source of all authority and legitimacy," according to BBC News.

His appearance was widely seen as a warning message to the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces, or SCAF, who had announced that the oath would be taken in front of the Supreme Constitutional Court.?

Morsi had earlier pushed to hold the ceremony in front of parliament. The fact that it took place in front of the court after all is being seen as the first of many possible future compromises with the ruling generals.?

The US-educated engineer is Egypt's fifth president since the monarchy fell some 60 years ago, said AP.?

Olympic Fever Boosting London Property Market - Oh No It Isn't

Olympic Fever Boosting London Property Market - Oh No It Isn't

Analysts, commentators and pundits are in hot debate about whether or not the Olympics is having a positive impact on London property prices and/or the rental market, and whether it will have any effects down the line.

The debate pits two of the most prolific experts on the London property market on opposite sides. Savills' director of residential research Yolande Barnes and Knight Frank's opposite number Liam Bailey are usually pretty close in their predictions and commentaries on the capital (admittedly they mostly comment on prime central London), but they blatantly disagree on whether the Olympics can cause a boom in the east London property market.

Looking at Land Registry data we can see that the anticipated and predicted boom in house prices hasn't materialised. According to the data house prices rose 5.1% in London in the year to end April 2012, but in the borough of Newham home to the Olympic Park, prices moved up just 2% during the same period.

Bailey agrees there has been no boom. "If you look at data from the Land Registry, prices have not boomed in any way ? they have followed the regional pattern really," he says. But more importantly he says there will be no boom, not even in the rental market.

We have reports from sites like Homelet talking about the "Olympic Impact" as London rental prices grew by 7.1% in the year ending April, and by 8.6% in east London (an area which includes and extends beyond Newham).? Bailey blatantly disagrees with this:? "The Olympics doesn't really have any impact in terms of demand, the infrastructure is the main legacy," he says, instead citing London's growing population and the fact that housing in the east is more affordable to the growing thousands in need of houses to rent.

Meanwhile Barnes agrees that there has been no boom, but argues that it is only a matter of time as most of the new housing developments are yet to be completed. Until those developments conclude, it's too soon to look for an Olympic housing boom, said Barnes.

"You absolutely wouldn't expect to have seen one yet," Barnes said. "If you look at this as a regeneration project, regeneration projects only make a difference when they are finished not before they have taken place."

Barnes does expect to see an improvement in house prices and rental rates in the months following the Games, once the Olympic Park and Athletes village become open to the public. However, the improvement will likely be steady owing to the type of housing that will become available.

"There are prospects for rental growth in the longer term as it's where more ordinary Londoners are going to live. [Buyers] will increasingly be investors looking for high quality income streams," Barnes said.

There is even doubt over the heavily anticipated boom in high yield short term rentals. We have sites like HomeAway.co.uk reporting landlords fetching short term lets at rents 70% to 200% above the norm,? but others calling such reports hype and saying that such things will not happen often because of the thousands of properties on the market.

"There have been reports of astronomical rents and it's a lot of hype," says Joanne Doniger who runs AccommodateLondon.com. "I know that most companies with people working at the Olympics do not have great big budgets for luxury mansions and anyway, it's up to the guest because there is such a huge selection - it's a buyers' market."

Gumtree, which is a huge UK based classifieds site says that 2,321 ads posted for Olympic rentals between January and May and almost 10,500 replies to such posts. Based on that it would seem that demand is outstripping supply. However, looking at Gumtree now we can see that there are still thousands of properties remaining, which potentially means that renters have unrealistic expectations on what people are willing to pay.

Michael Banks, a director of London based lettings site Upad.co.uk also weighs in on the rental argument, saying any increase in rental rates will only be short-term, and is likely to affect other London boroughs as much as the eastern ones, as people from outside the city will seek to position themselves amidst other attractions offered by the capital. His statements on the potential for a boom in general though are particularly astute.

"There could be some long-term impact on the rental market in east London based on the investment in infrastructure, like the Westfield [Shopping] Centre, but it has nothing to do with 'brand Olympics'," Banks said. "If you look at other sporting stadia in London, like Wembley, the stadium does not increase the value in an area, it depresses it .... no one will pay extra to live there because the Olympics was there three years ago."

Scientist at Work Blog: Glowing Wildly on a Moonless Night

David Gruber, an assistant professor of biology at Baruch College and research associate at the American Museum of Natural History, is leading a National Geographic Society/Waitt Institute expedition exploring bioluminescent and biofluorescent marine animals in the Solomon Islands.

Saturday, June 23

Storm clouds hang ominously over Mount Rano as the darkness of night descends, jeopardizing a valuable night of research. We have been waiting out the storm and unable to set up on the reef while there is still daylight. Earlier in the day, we mused about the efforts to pull this expedition off: more than a year of planning, specialty parts machined, traveling for three days on a journey involving five flights and one boat ride, and safely shipping 23 bags to a remote location. The last thing we want is to be dry-docked.

After two hours of torrential downpours and strong winds that have churned up the normally placid waters, the weather breaks and we confer with our local guides about the possibility of diving. We rely on the navigational knowledge and skills of our guides, who can slip in and out of dark lagoons and reef breaks with ease.

Tonight, Rubin Napao is our driver and guide. Rubin is a 33-year-old fisherman from a nearby island and one of the few locals who also scuba dives. Rubin drives the 17-foot boat with one hand on the outboard throttle and occasionally uses the other hand to shine a flashlight, seeking a few sporadic markers for reference or watching for shallow coral heads in our path. The moonless night and lack of artificial light make the sea pitch black.

Inside the boat, we are huddled low, holding onto our equipment so it does not become unfastened. At the first intended site, we encounter strong winds and a surging current that makes it too hazardous to dive with our cumbersome scientific equipment. Rubin drives the boat farther into darkness with waves crashing over the boat?s narrow gunwales. Within 15 minutes, he brings us to a sheltered lagoon and we anchor about 50 meters off a palm-covered island. We assemble our gear.

We have two tasks for tonight. We plan to continue our search for biofluorescent creatures using our high-intensity blue lights. Later, we will perform the first test of our underwater low-light color camera. Dan Tchernov and I are holding the blue lights and navigating to diverse biofluorescent areas, Ken Corben is filming with the RED Epic camera, Vincent Pieribone is testing the underwater bioluminescent camera and John Sparks and Robert Schelly are collecting nocturnally active fish. We have also given Rubin a yellow visor so he can witness the biofluorescence stimulated by the blue lights. We will be doing two dives, each for an hour.

One by one, we shout ?Diver in!? and splash into the inky water. The bright blue lights, battery packs and camera systems are then handed down from the boat, and we begin our descent. With yellow filters over our masks, the reef erupts into vivid green and red patterns. The fluorescent glow comes primarily from the stony corals and anemones, some of which glow wildly under our custom-made spectrally pure blue light source; others, curiously, exhibit no photic response.

We wander around the reef and hover over an anemone a meter across, with several resident clown fish. The anemone is a bright extraterrestrial green, but under our lighting, the orange clown fish are black silhouettes against their glowing host. As we descend down the reef, we encounter a strange moving fluorescence. Ken Corben, our cinematographer, follows the glowing motion and nestles into a sandy patch to focus the image. As my eyes adjust, I see the moving fluorescence is coming from a common reef fish, a bream (family Nemipteridae). The fish is dazed by our bright blue light (definitely a Roswell-like alien encounter for this fish), and I can see its green fluorescent racing stripes across the top of its head and cheeks. Some shallow reef fishes are known to exhibit red fluorescence, but green fluorescence was virtually unknown until very recently.

Two Satellites See an Evaporating Exoplanet

A solar flare that erupted at just the right time and direction could disrupt long-distance phone calls here on Earth, or make TV signals drops out for a while. But that?s nothing compared to the pummeling one exoplanet takes from its home star.

Thanks to a rare moment of synchronicity between the Hubble and Swift satellites, researchers at NASA recorded the first observed change in the atmosphere of a planet outside of our solar system. The planet, called HD 189733b, received a rather rude shock from its home star.

Scientists have been using Hubble to keep an eye on this Jupiter-like gas planet since 2010. The planet orbits a star that can be seen easily with just a pair of binoculars, making it an easy target for astronomers trying to understand planetary atmospheres. In September 2011, Hubble was set to record HD 189733b passing in front of its star (a transit). But eight hours before that transit happened, Swift?a satellite charged with searching for cosmic explosions?caught something unexpected. The star that the exoplanet orbits expelled a giant X-ray flare.

Eight hours after the flare, Hubble recorded the planet?s atmosphere evaporating from its super-heated poles at an extreme rate. Hydrogen was leaving the confines of the gas giant at more than 300,000 miles per hour, and every second another 1000 tons of gas shot out into space, giving the planet a comet-like tail.

If the Sun released that much radiation, our planet probably would make it through just fine. HD 189733b, however, is about 12 times closer to its star than Mercury is to ours. Even though its star is smaller than the sun, that tiny distance doesn?t give the planet much chance to evade a blast of radiation. Luckily for the planet, it?s so huge (14 percent larger than Jupiter) that even the trauma of a flare won?t deplete its atmosphere completely.

This research will be published in an upcoming issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Mahan builds 2-shot lead at Congressional

(AP) ? A punishing golf course. Temperatures that topped 100. Hunter Mahan still managed to make Friday at Congressional feel like a breeze.

Mahan finally had a good score to match the efficient way he has been swinging the club. He made seven birdies in the stifling heat for a 6-under 65, giving him a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the AT&T National as he goes after a PGA Tour-leading third win of the year.

Chris Couch sought medical attention and struggled to finish in the oppressive conditions. One caddie had to stop after nine holes, and another vomited to the side of the 13th green from drinking too much water.

Tiger Woods stayed in the game with a 68 in the morning, when it was still so hot that towels were used to wipe sweaty faces more than to clean clubs. He talked about the value of staying fit and strong to survive days like this. He was five shots behind.

Mahan, though, has set himself apart for two days.

"I hit a lot of good shots," said Mahan, who missed only two fairways and three greens. "I hit so many fairways and greens, I made it easy on myself. This is a pretty punishing golf course if you get off line a little bit. I put myself in some great spots to make putts. And I felt like I played well on the back, when it was getting really hot and you're getting a little bit more tired."

Mahan was at 7-under 135. His two rounds fulfilled what his swing coach, Sean Foley, said Thursday when describing his ball-striking as "a laser show."

Robert Garrigus had his sixth straight sub-par round at Congressional ? that includes last year at the U.S. Open when he became a footnote in history as only the fourth American to break par all rounds of a U.S. Open ? with a 67 and was two shots behind, along with Jimmy Walker and Brendon De Jonge, who each had a 69.

Stewart Cink, who draped a towel over his head waiting his turn to putt on the 14th green, showed signs of a resurgence with a 68 that put him in the group three shots behind, along with Vijay Singh (70), Pat Perez (69) and Rod Pampling (67).

Woods was at 2-under 140, in a tie for 11th.

More telling than only 18 players who remained under par was the cut at 148. It was one shot higher than the cut for the U.S. Open last year at Congressional, and it was the highest score to make the cut at a regular PGA Tour event since 149 at The Barclays in 2009.

Congressional was tough ? fast and firm on the course, scorching in the air ? but it was fair.

Mahan twice had to save par over the last five holes. He came up short on the 14th, but he had a couple of options. With the pin all the way to the back behind a ridge, he could run it up the slope to the hole, or even play long and have it roll back to the hole. He chose to lag it to the hole, hit it thin, and got away with the slight miss when it rolled back to 2 feet.

"I expected to hit it a little bit cleaner off the club face, but that how you shoot 65," he said. "Get good breaks like that."

He was more pleased with the 17th, which he called the one loose swing of the day. Mahan missed the green to the right, but saved par. On the 18th, he ripped a tee shot and had sand wedge into the green to 12 feet for one last birdie.

Woods was as happy about two pars as he was with his 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole that put him under par for the first time all week.

He was in trouble early after a few tee shots were caught in the dense rough that makes Congressional feel like a U.S. Open and forced him to hack out short of the green. Both times, he hit wedges that landed by the hole, bounced 15 feet by and caught the slope to come back within 3 feet.

"The pars at 14 and 15 were something I needed to have happen," Woods said. "I hit two good wedge shots in there after two poor drives and gave myself a couple good looks, made those, and then I rewarded all that hard work at the next hole with eagle."

Woods was three shots behind when he finished, and didn't expect to fall back much farther. The course, already looking like it was supposed to play last year for the U.S. Open, was getting firm and crusty from the scorching heat. It was the kind of day reminiscent of when Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, so dehydrated he almost didn't finish. And high heat was expected well into the weekend, making this a test of survival.

But there were birdies available, with some pins tucked behind slopes to feed the ball close to the hole.

Garrigus took advantage of a forward tee on the 12th hole to stuff his approach inside 4 feet, and then he really let his length work to his advantage toward the end of the back nine. He belted a 348-yard tee shot beyond the bunkers on the par-5 16th that left him only a 6-iron into the green. And on the 18th, with the tees move up to 481 yards, he hit a drive so far along the downhill fairway that he had only a lob wedge left. He spun that back to a few feet.

He closed out his round on the par-5 ninth, which played 597 yards. He hit 7-wood for his second shot just short of the green to set up an easy birdie.

Garrigus was rightfully proud when he mentioned Thursday evening that he was only the fourth American with four sub-par rounds in the U.S. Open. The others were Lee Trevino at Oak Hill in 1968, Lee Janzen at Baltusrol in 1993 and Curtis Strange at Oakmont in 1994. Strange and Garrigus are the only ones in that group who didn't win.

Even going back to previous AT&T National events at Congressional, Garrigus has quite a record ? this was his 18th round, and he has only been over par three times.

"Everything about this course fits my eye," he said. "If I'm playing well and swinging it good, I feel like I can hit every fairway, just the way everything sets up. They give you perfect targets. There's stuff to aim at. That's what I love."

Length never hurts, but it helps to cope with the heat. Perez, who grew up in San Diego, was asked five questions after his second straight round of 69. Three of those answers included the words, "It's hot."

The biggest tease of the day was the sound of a sprinkler ? not on the course, but in a backyard next to the 14th green.

JAMES' BLOG: Change Management Issues

Change Management Issues

At the moment the company is researching change management issues and have discovered a lot of mistakes that caused failure. We noted five common mistakes:

Mistake #1:?Not envolving the employees?- leaders must actively involve the people most affected by the change in its implementation. This will help ensure employees at all levels of the organization embrace the proposed changes.?

Mistake #2:?Not enough leadership?- several leaders focus too much on management and too little on leadership.

Mistake #3:?Ignoring current corporate culture?- when people in an organization realize and recognize that their current organizational culture needs to transform to support the organization?s success and progress, Mistake 3change can occur.

Mistake #4:? Lack of communication?- change management communications need to be targeted to each segment of the workforce. It should be delivered in a two-way fashion that allows people to make sense of the change subjectively.??

Mistake #5:?Lack of skills and resources?- change does not happen through goals and exhortation alone. Like any business operation, It also calls for the right skills and resources, Organizations often simply fail to commit the necessary time, people, and resources to making change work. Paradoxically, successful behavior change often demands the very skills the change Is trying to create.

So I absolutely share the sweet temptation of rubbing the eye allergies flare even when people fall victim to. But as a physician, I have to say that the responsibility for the fire, pouring rubbing itchy eyes water like oil. It just makes things worse.

Murdoch's News Corp considering splitting in two

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp said it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies, sending its shares up 6 percent as investors bet the troubled publishing business will be spun out of the more lucrative entertainment arm.

Shareholders have been pushing for some time for News Corp to get rid of its newspapers business, after a phone hacking scandal hit Murdoch's British newspapers and forced the company to drop its proposed acquisition of pay-TV group BSkyB.

A split would be the clearest sign that the global media conglomerate is making a break from its newspaper roots, and will raise new questions about the succession plan at the family-controlled business with an 81-year old patriarch.

Many investors have said they favor Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey to take the chief executive job running the entertainment business, perhaps with Murdoch as chairman.

Murdoch's children Elizabeth and James, both senior News Corp executives, are expected to stay with the entertainment unit. It is less clear who would run the publishing business, with options including Murdoch himself, the return of his eldest son Lachlan to an executive role, or Joel Klein, the head of News Corp's fledgling education business.

In a one-sentence statement, News Corp confirmed news reports that it is "considering a restructuring to separate its business into two distinct publicly traded companies." The conglomerate gave no other details.

According to one person familiar with the situation, a move to separate entertainment and publishing is being championed by Carey as a way to boost shareholder value.

The matter has been under discussion for a "considerable period of time" and no final decision has been made, a second source said, adding that no plan has yet been formally proposed to the board.

A third source with knowledge of the matter said a plan to break up the company Murdoch has controlled for more than 50 years ago is under "serious consideration."

"There became a moment when he started to realize this would be the best way to allow both businesses to grow in their own way," the person said. All three sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

ANOTHER TILT AT BSKYB

Carey said in May that management and the board had discussed spinning off the publishing business following investor pressure but did not have any plans to push ahead at that time.

The Australian-born Murdoch made his name by buying newspapers in Australia and then the News of the World, the Sun and the Times newspapers in Britain, and he talks often about his love for newspapers and the publishing industry.

Murdoch had earlier opposed a split, and as recently as May said the group was not considering spinning off its British newspapers to protect the rest of the empire.

Analysts believe investors and some management felt emboldened by the hacking scandal to push for a change. The Wall Street Journal, which is owned by News Corp, reported that the Murdoch family is not expected to lose its effective control of any of the businesses involved if a split goes through.

London-based analyst Ian Whittaker at Liberum Capital said a spinoff of the publishing division could enable News Corp to make another bid for BSkyB once the hacking scandal died down.

"It makes sense, given that the newspaper part has been the scandal-hit element of the business," he said. "It also suggests that they may even have another tilt at Sky in the medium term. I imagine it would be seen as positive by the shareholders outside of the family."

News Corp pulled its $12 billion bid for the 61 percent of BSkyB it did not already own last July, under a weight of public outrage sparked by the admission that staff at the News of the World tabloid had repeatedly hacked into phones to source salacious stories.

Shares of News Corp plummeted last year, at the height of the hacking scandal, before recovering this year to hit four-year highs, helped by a $10 billion share buyback program. The stock was up 6.1 percent at $21.31 in early afternoon trading.

PUBLISHING UNIT

News Corp's film and television businesses include the 20th Century Fox film studio, Fox broadcasting network and Fox News channel. The entertainment business, which generated revenues of $23.5 billion in the year to June 2011, would dwarf the publishing unit, which posted $8.8 billion in revenue.

The publishing division includes the HarperCollins book publisher, the education arm headed by Klein, and newspapers including The Wall Street Journal, the Times of London, the Sun, the New York Post and The Australian.

Publishing, including integrated marketing services, accounts for around 7 percent of News Corp's enterprise value, according to analysts at Barclays Capital. It estimates that publishing represents 24 percent of revenues and around 11 percent of operating income.

News Corp's 39 percent stake in BSkyB came under scrutiny in the spring after a British parliamentary committee questioned whether Murdoch was "fit and proper" to run the business.

British regulator Ofcom is currently deliberating that point among others and is due to make a decision in coming weeks.

"It's about Ofcom deciding whether the company is fit and proper to hold a broadcast license," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Thomas Eagan. "This split would help ameliorate those concerns."

The hacking scandal reverberated throughout the wider New York-based media conglomerate and disrupted what was thought to have been a smooth plan for Murdoch to be succeeded as CEO by his youngest son, James.

It has also revealed the close relationships in Britain between the government and News Corp executives. Police have arrested over 50 News Corp staff and public officials while the former head of the British newspaper division Rebekah Brooks, a close confidante to Murdoch, is awaiting a trial for interfering with the police investigation.

YouTube for Android 4.0 ends buffering on your favorite videos with precaching, adds remote

YouTube for Android 40 ends buffering on your favorite videos with precaching, adds remote

As Google I/O 2012 rolls along, the YouTube team is updating its Android app to v4.0 with a load of new features, but you'll need Android 4.0+ to take advantage of them (at least for now, see below). Available in 47 countries, the new app brings a brand new UI with support for channels that reflects the redesign rolled out on the website last year (not the circle-centric look that it is testing with a select few), and it can precache videos from your favorite channels for viewing later. All you have to do is select "preload" in the setting menu and it will pull down videos from your subscriptions and Watch Later queue when plugged in and on WiFi. To actually view them later you will still need to be online, but they'll load instantly from the device's storage instead of streaming.

Another new feature is integrated remote functionality to control playback on connected TVs and other devices. This apparently extends to more than just Google TV, as we're told to "expect more updates later" on how this feature will become broadly available. If you're not rocking the latest Android software don't freak out yet, as the team indicates these features will come to more devices later. Developers should be excited too as there's a slew of new YouTube APIs available, hit the source links below to check them out or download the app yourself.

'Dark Knight Rises': Batman Must Die

While comic book logic refuses to let major characters die, there's only one satisfying way to end this franchise, the Weekly Rising says.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Christian Bale in "Dark Knight Rises"
Photo:

Batman cannot die. Bruce Wayne laid that in clear language while riding on his jet with Alfred in "Batman Begins." "As a man, I'm flesh and blood. I can be ignored I can be destroyed, but as a symbol — as a symbol — I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting."

That view was never considered a radical change in Christopher Nolan's revisionist take on the Caped Crusader. That's always been Batman's mindset.

Comic book logic, however, refuses to let any major character truly, permanently die, and the light air of previous film versions would never have taken the character that far and risk ending a successful film franchise. But ending a series is precisely what Nolan intends to do with "The Dark Knight Rises."

In the latest issue of Empire, the series' creators (Nolan included) discuss giving their story a definitive ending. And though such a finale is never expressly stated, one cannot help but walk away from the article believing that not only is it likely Bruce Wayne will die or retire at the end of "DKR," but that it's exactly what should happen.

A large portion of the lengthy article deals directly with the idea of Nolan ending his run of Batman films with a period instead of a more traditional and economically friendly ellipsis. This kind of move is unprecedented when dealing with a property as infinitely reusable as Batman. Jonathan, Nolan's brother and co-writer, told Empire that he feels a solid ending helps the functions of a storyteller.

"It's the right way to end it — to blow the whole thing up! It's better than trying to spin the thing out indefinitely and make it into the Bond franchise," Jonathan Nolan said. "I mean, they've successfully pulled it off with Bond, but at certain costs, certainly at the cost of continuity. I think with almost every other franchise it's a mistake to try and keep those plates spinning. You want stakes. You want tectonic plates to shift. And as a writer you wanna feel you've worked on a complete story, with a beginning, a middle and an end."

Jonathan Nolan's reasoning behind his brother's choice to end the story necessitates some significant change in the life of Bruce Wayne, but if that shift isn't drastic enough, "The Dark Knight Rises" will not be considered a finale. The movie itself may have a conclusion, but without real, lasting transformation for the character and the series, Nolan would fail to deliver on the one promise he has made over and over again: an ending.

But does that necessarily mean the death or retirement of Bruce Wayne? For "The Dark Knight Rises" to be a true end as Nolan has indicated, the lasting effect of this film has to render the idea of any further Christian Bale/ Christopher Nolan Batman movies either impossible or meaningless. How do you do that? There are two ways: either Wayne experiences an epiphany, changing or solidifying his world view for good, or he dies/retires while the symbol lives on as foreshadowed in "Batman Begins." Which sounds more appealing to you? To use Nolan's word, which has more "stakes"?

Even if Bruce Wayne's ultimate fate won't be revealed until the film opens on July 20, it's almost guaranteed that his life will be on the throughout the film, simply because of Bane's presence in the story. "Bane is a resourceful, cunning and committed villain who knows exactly what he wants," Jonathan Nolan said when comparing him to the Joker. "He wants Batman dead and Gotham in ruins. That's fitting for a third film."

Perhaps the most telling evidence of Bruce Wayne's demise comes from the much-circulated quote from co-writer David S. Goyer, describing the final sequence of the film and his emotional reaction to seeing it onscreen. "The final scene of 'The Dark Knight Rises' is exactly that scene we talked about then," he said. "It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everything strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat."

I rest my case.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."
