Me: ?Have you ever ever been to a serious relationship before? Patrick: ?Nope.? Re replied. Me: ?Why?? Patrick: ?It?s as a result of I?m not prepared yet.? Me: ?What are the issues that made you not ready? I asked again. He simply shrugged his shoulders and paused. Patrick: ?It is simply because I am afraid to commit to a lady, and I don?t need to get married at this time. I am afraid that I may not handle the tasks of a father and a husband on the identical time.? Me: ?Then you might be one of those who?re afraid of commitments or the concern of commitment.? Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Symptoms of lyme disease in childrenDiscovered in USA in 1921, Lyme disease is most prevalent in regions of Northern hemisphere. Around 25% of the patients suffering from Lyme disease are children.

Children falling victim to such infection show vague symptoms similar to many common illnesses. If discovered in early stages, the infection can be easily be eradicated with treatment with antibiotics.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease such as ?Ixodes ticks?, which are commonly known as deer ticks. The ticks act as a carrier for the bacteria of genus Borrelia, as in different regions around the world different species of the bacteria emerge as the chief offender. Species which have found to cause Lyme disease includes Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii.

Areas within heavily wooded regions or grass field are most likely to harbor the Ixodes ticks; outdoor activities may put children in danger of receiving a tick bite. A tick serving as a reservoir for the bacteria need needs to be associated with the victim to successfully transfer the infection. In all individuals bitten by deer-tick, only 10% cases result in infection.

Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

Symptoms for Lyme disease may appear after one to two weeks which is the incubation period for the bacteria. One of the earliest symptom in appearance of a rash commonly known as? Erythema Migrans? (EM). Being peculiar in its shape, the rash resembles like a bulls eye symbol where A central red spot surrounded by expanding ring of reddish skin. The rash in most cases is non-itchy and painless.

However, as normally two third of patient shows the appearance of EM rash, a child may directly rush to secondary symptoms without any sign of EM rash.

If left untreated, the infected child may show more severe symptoms generally similar to that of common flu. Child may experience fatigue, insomnia, nausea, abdominal pain, fever, dizziness and sensitivity to light.

Children in given stage can be identified by loss of concentration, confused state of mind, erratic behavior, mood swings, and poor short-term memory. The respective symptoms are result of progressive infection affecting brain and central nervous system.

As the infection advances, child may experience facial paralysis with numbness in the arms and legs. The victim becomes susceptible to meningitis with symptoms such as headache and stiffness of neck. Child?s heart rate may increase with migrating pain in muscles, joints and tendons.

Since the time of infection at an average of 6 months, child enters into the late stage of Lyme disease. Most prominent of outcome observed to be arthritis, particularly in the knee or other large joints.

Chronic manifestation of infection include encephalitis, frequent fevers, increased incidence of ear and throat infections, increased incidence of pneumonia, irritability, joint-body pain, poor muscle tone, gastroesophageal reflux, small windpipe (tracheomalacia), eye problems, developmental delay, learning disabilities and psychiatric problems

Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease

Diagnosis of lyme disease

Peculiar symptoms such a EM rash helps doctors to identify the Lyme disease. However blood may be tested to confirm presence of bacteria. Tests such as, ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), Western blot test, PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) are helpful to identify antibodies specific to Borrelia infection.

Treatment Of Lyme Disease

The patients undergo a regimen of antibiotics to ward off infection. In children of early stage of infection, antibiotics like doxycycline, amoxicillin or cefuroxime are administered orally with a course of 14 to 21 days. Children with progressive infection antibiotics are applied intravenously for 14 to 28 days, as patient may show side effects such as lowered blood cell count with mild or severe diarrhea.

Prevention Of Lyme Disease

Protection from tick bite is most obvious preventive measure as care is to be taken when children are involved in outdoor activities. However, if a tick is found attached to the child?s body, it should be carefully removed using tweezers. As the tick requires 24 hours of attachment period, such a removal reduces the possibility of infection completely.

Parents need to be especially alert when visiting places with common occurrence of Lyme disease. In case of suspected bite, a close eye is to keep on developments of initial symptoms such as EM rash, fever, chills, fatigue, joint or muscle pain.

Facebook shares sink to new low after 2Q results

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock hit a new low Friday after it reported lukewarm second-quarter results and didn't give an outlook for the coming months.

The stock fell $3.83, or more than 14 percent, to $23.02 in morning trading Friday. Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering of stock priced at $38, and its low had been $25.52, hit on June 6. The stock is now about 39 percent below its IPO price.

Facebook issued its first financial report as a public company after the market closed Thursday. The company reported slightly stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed.

Although revenue grew 32 percent in the second quarter, growth has slowed from earlier this year and from previous years. That's a concern for a newly public company. Investors are willing to value new companies highly, even if they are not making a profit, because they expect booming revenue.

Baird's Colin Sebastian also pointed out that the company is spending more on technology and hiring, driving up expenses.

But he's not overly concerned. He backed his "Outperform" rating for Facebook, saying advertising revenue was better than expected and the company is improving its ability to make money from users who access Facebook from apps on their phones and tablet computers.

Other analysts remained positive, too. Of 27 analysts available from FactSet, 15 have "Buy" ratings or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.

Mobile and users in developing countries are driving growth in active monthly users, Sebastian said. Facebook had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year ago.

"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," said Citi analyst Mark Mahaney. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."

Analysts also cautioned that the stock could be volatile because Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Overall the company reported a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the April-June period, mainly because of compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago.

The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

Facebook's revenue of $1.18 billion was slightly higher than the $1.16 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

The results came two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ? even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Senior Housing and Assisted Living ? Investing in Indianapolis Real ...

Home
> Management & Operators > Investing in Indianapolis Real Estate: The Three Mistakes Investors Make

The Indianapolis housing market has attracted lots of attention from first-time traders, and you could just be one of all of them. However, a lot of investors wind up making some major mistakes on the way, leading them to losing lots of money from their expense portfolios. Over the years I?ve seen first-time investors make exactly the same mistakes in some way. So in an effort to help long term investors, here are those mistakes organized in the easiest terms.

Paying too much to have an investment property ? An in depth study of the investment that you?re looking to make is essential. As much as feasible, try to find a house that?s priced below marketplace value, so that you?ve got a better chance of making larger income. The best way to determine if a property can be obtained at a reasonable price would be to read a listing cost beside comparative sales in the region. Rule of thumb: if you cannot get the negotiations to visit your way, then leave from it. All About the Concept of Debt Management | Rebateables

Date July 27, 2012

Avoiding debt issues is not in any one's hands. If someone has taken loans, he has to pay the amounts in time before the maturity date expires and the loans convert to debts with high rate of interest more commonly known as the default rate of interest. While people take up loans, they do not realize that as they are not able to pay for their daily life needs through their own pocket, they will not be able to pay for the loans in time from their pocket when they have no way out or any extra income ways.

WSUV Professor Earns Acclaim For Childhood Obesity Research

July 27th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Colombian??

Clark County?s university campus lay still this week, with only a few final exams left in the summer term.

But Jane Lanigan is not expecting downtime real soon.

The Clark County researcher is involved in several national efforts to combat childhood obesity, and even made a splash in the international research community this spring. Her study on how to get kids to eat healthy and exercise produced an interview method that may soon be used to assess childhood-obesity programs nationwide.

Lanigan, who has taught at WSUV for 10 years, last year completed a three-year pilot project as its lead researcher. The project was called Encouraging Healthy Activity and Nutrition in Childcare Environments, or ENHANCE.

The project, which was a collaboration of several nonprofits, colleges and a K-12 agency, examined 43 child care and early-learning facilities in Clark County. It was paid for by the Northwest Health Foundation, a Portland nonprofit.

?We were aware that the obesity problem has become quite acute throughout Washington,? Lanigan said.

A lot of the then-current research focused on kids already in school. About one-third of all middle- and high-school-aged children in Washington are overweight or obese, according to federal health data.

U.S. economic growth slowed to 1.5 pct. rate in Q2

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back sharply on spending. The weaker growth adds to worries that the economy could be stalling three years after the recession ended.

The Commerce Department also said Friday that the economy grew a little better than previously thought in the January-March quarter. It raised its estimate to a 2 percent rate, up from 1.9 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent isn't enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.2 percent last month. And most economists don't expect growth to pick up much in the second half of the year. Europe's financial crisis and a looming budget crisis in the U.S. are expected to slow business investment further.

"The main take away from today's report, the specifics aside, is that the U.S. economy is barely growing," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC. "Along with a reduction in the actual amount of money companies were able to make, it's no wonder the unemployment rate cannot move lower."

Some economic data improved over the course of the April-June quarter, while others worsened. Hiring, for example, rose slightly from April to May to June. But home sales weakened.

Stocks rose as investors to shrug off the weak U.S growth and focus on a pledge from the European Central Bank president to keep the euro together. The Dow Jones industrial average increased 113 points in midday trading, and broader indexes also gained.

The lackluster economy is raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said that the sluggish second-quarter growth rate is probably not weak enough to trigger more action by the Federal Reserve when it meets next week.

Many economists, however, believe the Fed will launch another round of bond buying at its September policy meeting. The aim is to drive long-term interest rates lower and encourage more borrowing and spending.

Glenn Hubbard, economic adviser for Romney, said Friday's report on growth was largely what economists were expecting. "But those expectations themselves and the report itself were actually quite disappointing," he noted.

"At that pattern, the economy simply will never return to full employment," he said.

Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the report showed the economy grew for the 12th straight quarter.

Congress could strengthen growth and job creation by adopting President Barack Obama's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for all but the wealthiest Americans, Krueger said.

Republicans want the tax cuts extended for all Americans.

The 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter was the weakest since the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, expanded at a 1.3 percent rate in the July-September quarter last year. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of a cup of coffee to the sale of fighter jets.

Current-dollar GDP increased at an annual rate of $117.6 billion in the second quarter to $15.6 trillion.

Growth was weaker mostly because consumer spending slowed to a growth rate of just 1.5 percent. That's down from 2.4 percent in the first quarter. Americans bought fewer autos, computers and other long-lasting manufactured goods. Spending on services increased.

They also saved more. The savings rate increased to 4 percent, up from 3.6 percent in the first quarter.

Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight, said consumer spending is likely to remain subdued in the second half of the year, holding economic growth at or below 2 percent. Gas prices have stopped falling ? and have even started to rise in recent weeks. And this summer's severe drought is expected to push food prices higher toward the end of the year.

"There is really no reason to see us pulling out of this malaise any time soon," Gault said. "I am not calling for a recession, but I am calling for weak growth."

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

Weaker growth in consumer spending was offset in the second quarter somewhat by a slightly smaller drag from government spending. Spending at the state, local and federal level fell at an annual rate of 1.4 percent in the second quarter ? just half of the 3 percent rate of decline in the first quarter.

The Commerce Department also revised its growth estimates for the past three years. Those revisions showed that the economy contracted 3.1 percent in 2009, slightly less than the 3.5 percent previously reported. Growth in 2010 was put at 2.4 percent, down from 3 percent, with growth in 2011 at 1.8 percent instead of 1.7 percent.

Ford recalls nearly 500K Escape SUVs

The Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly half a million Escape model compact SUVs amid concerns over a potentially deadly problem with sticking accelerator pedals.

The new recall, which affects 2001 to 2004 models that have 3-liter, V-6 engines with cruise control or approximately 484,600 vehicles, was ordered after safety inspectors discovered the accelerator's speed control cables could become stuck on an engine cover when the pedal is almost fully depressed, according to a recall notice by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

The recall comes after ABC News' Phoenix affiliate, KNXV, launched an investigation into a Ford Escape crash that claimed the life of 17-year-old Saige Bloom. The Arizona teen lost control of her vehicle and crashed on a local road in January.

Moments before that crash, Bloom's mother, who was driving in another car behind her daughter, made frantic calls to 911 saying, "She cannot stop. We're coming to a red light and I don't know what to do for her," KNXV reported.

The younger Bloom plowed into another car and rolled three times. She later died of her injuries.

According to KNXV, an inspector hired by the Bloom family later discovered the vehicle's speed control cable had broken and become lodged under the engine cover, meaning the throttle was stuck at near full speed.

FULL COVERAGE at KNXV: ABC15 Ford Investigation

Ford spokesperson Marcey Zwiebel told ABC News that the issue does not spontaneously cause the vehicle to accelerate, but the accelerator can only get stuck after the driver has pressed the pedal all the way, or most of the way down.

Zwiebel also said that the company has only recently been able to investigate the vehicle involved in Bloom's death, but said Ford's internal investigation was not solely based on that single incident.

"We had a volume of data to review and analyze in order to ensure our investigation was thoroughly and properly implemented," Zweibel said.

In a customer information sheet, Ford said that most dealerships will not have the parts to permanently fix the problem just yet but said customers should go to their local dealership for an "interim repair, which will disable the speed control system on your vehicle to eliminate the possibility of a stuck throttle?"

"This temporary repair will allow you to continue driving your vehicle until parts for the permanent repair are available," the information sheet says.

ABC News' KNXV contributed to this report.

China's hawks gain sway in territorial dispute

China has adopted a more aggressive stance in recent weeks on territorial disputes in the South China Sea as hard-line officials and commentators call on Beijing to take a tougher line with rival claimants.

China's supreme policymaking body, the Politburo Standing Committee, is made up entirely of civilians, but outspoken People's Liberation Army (PLA) officers, intelligence advisers and maritime agency chiefs are arguing that Beijing should be more forceful in asserting its sovereignty over the sea and the oil and natural gas believed to lie under the sea bed.

Most of them blame the United States' so-called strategic "pivot" to Asia for emboldening neighboring countries, particularly the Philippines and Vietnam, to challenge China's claims.

"China now faces a whole pack of aggressive neighbors headed by Vietnam and the Philippines and also a set of menacing challengers headed by the United States, forming their encirclement from outside the region," wrote Xu Zhirong, a deputy chief captain with China Marine Surveillance, in the June edition of China Eye, a publication of the Hong Kong-based China Energy Fund Committee.

Analysis: Firepower bristles in South China Sea

"And, such a band of eager lackeys is exactly what the U.S. needs for its strategic return to Asia," he wrote.

Eager to avoid military conflict?
Most Chinese and foreign security policy analysts believe China wants to avoid military conflict across sea lanes that carry an annual $5 trillion in ship-borne trade, particularly if it raises the prospect of U.S. intervention.

However, they say Beijing is increasingly determined to block any unified effort from rival claimants to negotiate over disputes, preferring instead to isolate much smaller and weaker states in direct talks.

There was evidence of this harder line at an annual foreign ministers' meeting of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations bloc earlier this month where diplomats said China's influence behind the scenes led to an unprecedented breakdown in the grouping's traditional preference for maintaining an appearance of harmony and unity.

The meeting in Phnom Penh ended in disarray without progress on a proposed code of conduct that was aimed at minimizing the risk of conflict in the South China Sea or issuing a concluding communique.

China's close ally Cambodia, the meeting's host, blocked every attempt to include tensions in the South China Sea on the agenda, said the diplomats from other member nations.

China wary as US, Philippines stage war games

On the military front, China's powerful Central Military Commission has approved the formal establishment of a military garrison for the South China Sea.

The move, announced this week , is essentially a further assertion of China's sovereignty claims after it last month raised the administrative status of the seas to the level of a city, which it calls Sansha.

Behind the Wall: More NBC News coverage from China

The official Xinhua news agency said the Sansha garrison would be responsible for "national defense mobilization ... guarding the city and supporting local emergency rescue and disaster relief" and "carrying out military missions."

The city government is located on the less than one-square mile Yongxing Island, according to Xinhua, which contains a small military airport, a sea port, roads, a clinic, a post office and an observatory. This is in the Paracels, a group of islands also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan.

A ship calls twice in a month from nearby Hainan province to serve its 613 residents.

Xu, a regular commentator on maritime security issues, is one of many analysts arguing that recent tensions are a direct result of the Obama administration's announcement late last year of a strategic shift that would eventually see 60 percent of the U.S. Navy's warships deployed to the Asia Pacific, up from the current 50 percent.

US, Philippines downplay China fears while staging war games

The U.S. move is widely seen as a response to China's growing military power and increasingly assertive behavior in dealing with contested territory.

China's recent disputes with the Philippines over the Scarborough Shoal and Vietnam over oil exploration rights have heightened regional fears that tension in the South China Sea could lead to armed conflict.

One of China's most hawkish army officers, Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu, an influential teacher and strategy researcher at Beijing's National Defense University, has dismissed the entitlement of these rivals to the disputed waters.

Philippines refuses to budge on South China Sea dispute

In a speech to the World Peace Forum in Beijing earlier this month, Zhu said it was "unreasonable and illegal" for the Philippines and Vietnam to claim territory that historically belonged to China.

He said there had been no disputes in the South China Sea before the 1970s when maps published by rival claimants also acknowledged it was Chinese territory.

'Meddling'
"Relevant countries did not begin to lay claim to islands and sea waters in the area until the discovery of large amounts of oil and gas reserves in the South China Sea," he said, according to an extract of his speech published in the official Global Times newspaper last week.

Zhu also blamed U.S. "meddling" for prolonging the current tension.

The retired general is best known for his assertion in 2005 that China should use nuclear weapons against the United States if American forces intervened in a conflict over Taiwan.

He escaped any serious censure over what he stressed at the time were his personal views and has since become a regular member of high-level Chinese military delegations in security talks with U.S. counterparts.

Wife of ousted China politician charged with Briton's murder

Other officials calling for a tougher line include Cui Liru, president of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, a Beijing think-tank closely linked to China's intelligence services, and Maj. Gen. Luo Yuan, a retired army officer who is well known for his hard-line views and provocative media commentaries.

It is unclear how much sway these blunt-speaking officials exercise over foreign and military policies or whether their views reflect official thinking.

But for the PLA, the persistent territorial disputes undermine a carefully-honed image as a force that will never allow foreign powers to encroach on Chinese territory as they did in the colonial period.

"The South China Sea situation is certainly highly frustrating for Chinese military officers," said Sun Yun, a Washington-based China security policy expert and a former analyst with the International Crisis Group in Beijing.

"If the PLA cannot even defend China's own territory at its doorstep, what capacity or legitimacy does it have to cruise around the world?"

NBCNews.com topic: China

Some top Chinese policymakers say neighboring countries should accept that an increasingly powerful China would seek to re-shape relationships that had been established earlier when it was weak.

Stephen Hadley, former President George W. Bush's national security advisor and now a consultant, said when he was on a visit to Beijing earlier this month a senior Chinese official had told him that China's views should be given more weight now that it had become stronger.

In a talk to the Atlantic Council think-tank in Washington last week, Hadley said he could see some merit to this view but he added it could be a "destructive" way of framing issues.

"This new China is going to be hard to manage," he said.

Bellicose statements
However, notwithstanding the recent assertiveness and the bellicose statements of military and security officials, some analysts note that policy-making in China is not entirely in the hands of hawks.

"Given that all the members of the Politburo Standing Committee are civilians, their perceptions of the South China Sea issue are clearly more comprehensive than the generals," said Sun, the Washington-based expert.

However, others warn against making distinctions between the views of China's military brass, civilian leaders and diplomats.

Dean Cheng, a China security expert at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation, said Beijing was hardening its stance in the South China Sea and also in other maritime areas where it had disputes with Japan and South Korea.

"We have a broad set of hardliners, not just in uniform, but across the board," he said.

Pope calls for speed in deciding butler's fate

The pope has called on Holy See investigators to proceed quickly with their inquiry into a former butler for his role in the Vatican leaks scandal.

The decision over whether Paolo Gabriele should face trial will be made on August 6 or 7, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Friday.

The pontiff's former butler, Gabriele is the sole suspect behind the leaked documents, which revealed an atmosphere of intrigue at the Vatican and a power struggle centring around the powerful Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone.

Pope Benedict XVI met the examining magistrate on the case Thursday "to hear the progress of the criminal procedures underway," and "invited the Vatican magistrates to proceed expeditiously," the Holy See said in a statement.

Gabriele, who was arrested on May 23, is accused of stealing documents from the papal chambers, copying them and passing them on to a journalist.

He risks up to six years in prison but could also be pardoned by the pope.

If the trial goes ahead, it would not take place until October at the earliest, the Vatican has said.

Suspect in hepatitis C outbreak wrote suicide note

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? A traveling medical technician accused of causing a hepatitis C outbreak in New Hampshire wrote a suicide note saying he "couldn't handle this stress anymore" the week before his arrest, according to a police report.

David Kwiatkwoski was arrested last week at a Massachusetts hospital six days after police found him intoxicated in a hotel room scattered with prescription pills, according to police in Marlborough, Mass. Along with those new details of Kwiatkowski's recent past, his work history stretching back more than five years also continues to be investigated, though health officials say connecting him to hepatitis C cases on other states could be difficult.

The head of Arizona's state health lab said tests of people possibly exposed to hepatitis C back in 2009 and 2010 ? when Kwiatkowski worked in two Arizona hospitals ? could indicate whether they have the disease but not how they got it.

The virus mutates within the body, so linking any positive test results to Kwiatkowski would be more difficult over time, particularly past one year, said Victor Waddell, who has a doctorate in molecular biology and genetics.

"It's going to be very difficult if not impossible," Waddell said.

It's also unclear when Kwiatkowski became infected. He told authorities he was diagnosed in May; investigators say he has been infected since at least June 2010. In addition to Arizona, he worked in Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania before being hired by Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire in April 2011.

Kwiatkowski, 33, is accused of stealing anesthetic drugs from the hospital's cardiac catheterization lab and contaminating syringes used on patients. Kwiatkowski, who is being held on federal drug charges, told authorities he did not steal or use drugs.

Federal authorities previously indicated that Kwiatkowski might have tried to harm himself in the days before his arrest July 19. The Marlborough police report includes new details, including a list of six prescription drugs that were found in his hotel room.

According to the police report, first reported by The MetroWest Daily News in Framingham, Mass., there also was a note that read, "please call Kerry and let her know I passed away. Tell her I couldn't handle this stress anymore."

Home Improvement Information That You Must Know! | michael kors

Posted on | July 27, 2012 | Comments Off

A great home improvement project that you can do yourself is to replace your Formica counter tops with tile. Just strip off the old Formica and you will have a solid base for new tile. You can choose from thousands of different patterns and materials for your new counter top.

Fix the leaky faucet in your house. The water wasted from leaks can add up to hundreds of gallons per year, leading to a higher water bill for you and an unnecessary waste of a natural resource. Fixing a leak can be as simple as replacing a washer, so there is no reason not to do this simple improvement for your home.

Put a skirt on your bathroom sink! Tired of seeing those tired old pipes every time you go into your bathroom? Buy a pretty piece of fabric from the sewing center, cut it to size, and hem around all four edges. Run a cord through the top hem and gather the curtain so it hangs daintily in place.

Make sure you have a thorough understanding of your home improvement projects. This prevents you from underestimating the cost involved or the time necessary to complete a project. By making a list of the necessary steps and materials, you can ensure you are well-prepared, and you can also use the list to seek a second opinion to avoid missing any steps or overlooking any potential road blocks or complications.

When designing a renovation for your home, consider the value to you of a personal touch versus the return on investment you will receive upon selling the home. The more individualized you make your renovation, the less likely it is that someone else will want to buy it for enough to cover the cost of the work.

When doing home improvement projects, you want to choose one which will offer the highest potential return on the money invested in the remodeling job. One remodeling project which offers a great return is converting an attic into a functional bedroom area. On average, a homeowner can recoup about 83 percent of this project?s cost when they sell their home.

Make the plans for your home improvement project measure up to the standard sizes of supplies available at the store. For example, you?ll be buying wood that comes in even lengths measured by feet (4, 6, or 8). Try to make your project fit those measurements so you don?t have to do a lot of cutting.

Installing hand railings can improve the safety and beauty of your home. Key areas for railing are entrance ways, decks, platforms, sidewalks, balconies and stairways. Railings are especially helpful for children or the elderly. Various styles and materials can be found including steel, copper, bronze, aluminum, wrought iron, cables, rods, various woods and even glass. So, install useful and stylish railing to make your home safer and more appealing.

When thinking about doing home improvements, consider refinancing your mortgage to help pay for the renovations. With the lower rate and lower payment, you can offset many of the costs of remodeling with just this simple tip. After refinancing, you might also want to consider taking out a home improvement loan against the value of the home.

As you prepare to list your home for sale, it may be tempting to undertake major remodeling projects to increase the house?s appeal. These projects can easily run up credit card debt, which can damage your ability to secure favorable credit ratings and loan approval. Instead, look for small updates and inexpensive repairs, to make your home more appealing to potential buyers.

So as you can see, home improvement is not as complicated as it may appear. It is involved in terms of research and asking questions, but it is worth it in the end. With the above tips in mind, you should be smarter when it comes to improving things around your home.

FIFA suspends Bin Hammam from soccer for 90 days

LONDON (AP) ? FIFA stepped up investigations into alleged bribery by Mohamed bin Hammam on Thursday by banning the former presidential candidate from soccer for 90 days.

FIFA said its new independent prosecutor Michael Garcia wanted bin Hammam suspended while he examines an audit detailing alleged financial mismanagement of Asian Football Confederation accounts and billion-dollar commercial contracts during the Qatari official's leadership.

"The decision was taken ... in order to prevent interference with the establishment of the truth in respect of a preliminary investigation," FIFA said in a statement.

Garcia also is searching for new evidence that bin Hammam bribed Caribbean voters during his challenge to Sepp Blatter last year, FIFA said.

Bin Hammam had his life ban from soccer overturned last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week which decided that FIFA failed to prove its case.

Three days before the verdict, the Asian soccer body ensured that bin Hammam could not immediately return to office by imposing a 30-day ban while it studies the audit it commissioned.

FIFA's new suspension acts as a second blocking tactic, and denies him his seat at the FIFA executive committee table when it next meets in Zurich on Sept. 27-28.

Bin Hammam, who joined FIFA's executive committee in 1996, was elected as AFC president nine years ago and used his status as a platform to challenge his former ally Blatter.

The AFC audit, which was leaked to international media, alleged that Bin Hammam enriched himself, handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars to friends and relatives and awarded long-term, no-bid television rights at below market rates.

Auditors from a Pricewaterhouse Coopers unit in the AFC's home city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, advised the soccer body to start legal action against bin Hammam.

FIFA's latest probe is the first launched by Garcia since the Manhattan-based former U.S. lawyer was appointed as the soccer body's first anti-corruption prosecutor last week. Garcia is also "assessing the prospects of collecting further evidence" in relation to the case that CAS ruled on last week.

The CAS verdict revealed that FIFA tried to stall the court's verdict by offering the Asian audit as additional evidence against bin Hammam. The court rejected FIFA's attempts to stack up further allegations against him.

Despite ruling in favor of bin Hammam, the CAS panel declined to pronounce him innocent of bribery. The ruling said he was "more likely than not" the source of almost $1 million in cash which was offered as $40,000 payments to Caribbean soccer leaders after an electioneering visit to Trinidad in May 2011.

Bin Hammam withdrew his FIFA candidacy before it suspended him days ahead of polling. Blatter ran unopposed to get a fourth and final four-year term in office.

MassPrivateI: How universities are spying on students.

By Bennett Stein:

On Sunday, the New York Times published an extensive piece surveying the ways American universities are using their access to students? information to tailor their college experiences. Universities collect a huge amount of data on their students?course selection and grades, past educational experience and standardized test scores, and other personal information. Austin Peay University analyzes a student?s data and suggests classes in which the student is likely to ?succeed.? Arizona State University uses its data to identify students who are ?off track? based on course selection and course results. ASU is also experimenting with using information on student swipes of ID cards around campus?at the gym, at the dining hall, at the dorm, at the library, etc.?to understand social ties. (Last week, my colleague Catherine Crump also wrote about universities experimenting with monitoring students? internet usage to assess mental health.)

While universities have an important role in supporting students towards graduation, these data mining methods threaten campus as a place of self-exploration, development, and discovery. A student who knows that a computer is analyzing his course selection and grades may be less likely to choose a course out of the ordinary or take a risk on an assignment for fear of being deemed ?off track.?

During my first year of college at the University of Michigan, I took two Spanish classes, a bible lecture, a philosophy seminar, a course on political advertising, and a survey course on arts and culture in public life that was taught by a professor who primarily studied 20th Century avant-garde Mexican film. Like my academics, my social life was diverse and often disparate as I met kids unlike me and the people I knew growing up. While these courses may not have contributed directly to my eventual degree in public policy this past May nor to my current position with the ACLU?and those freshman year dorm buddies ended up being weirdos?the lessons and experiences from the decisions and mistakes I made as a fresh-out-of-high-school 18 year old still prove invaluable.

This blog has frequently described the chilling effects of similar data analysis programs on free speech and social interactions. These effects are particularly relevant on college campuses where malleable young people work towards critical decisions about lifestyle, world view, and career. Students must not feel restrained by the potential judgment of a computer program as they develop themselves as adults and community members. Pressuring students to fit into an algorithm threatens the intellectual and social vibrancy of the campus (and of society, as my colleague Jay Stanley discussed last week). Even if a student does not expect her behavior to be flagged for further scrutiny, we have seen time and again that these complex computer algorithms make mistakes that have very real consequences.

I am sure that I would have questioned my course selection had I thought it might be flagged as wrong. I might have opted out of second (or third) dinner at the dining hall had I expected my ID swipe would lead to someone noticing my eating habits. Instead, I grew a lot and learned a lot in college because I made choices that my academic advisors, my professors, maybe my mother?and even a computer program!?may have considered off track.

Big data on campus.

Universities see such technology as one answer to a big challenge. On average, only 31 percent of students at public colleges get their bachelor?s degree within four years, and 56 percent graduate within six years. Such statistics have come under greater scrutiny as parents and politicians demand accountability from colleges. Tennessee, for example, doles out higher education dollars in part by measuring how effective an institution is at graduating students.

With 72,000 students, A.S.U. is both the country?s largest public university and a hotbed of data-driven experiments. One core effort is a degree-monitoring system that keeps tabs on how students are doing in their majors. Stray off-course and a student may have to switch fields.?

And while not exactly matchmaking, Arizona State takes an interest in students? social lives, too. Its Facebook app mines profiles to suggest friends. One classmate shares eight things in common with Ms. Allisone, who ?likes? education, photography and tattoos. Researchers are even trying to figure out social ties based on anonymized data culled from swipes of ID cards around the Tempe campus.

This is college life, quantified.?

Data mining hinges on one reality about life on the Web: what you do there leaves behind a trail of digital breadcrumbs. Companies scoop those up to tailor services, like the matchmaking of eHarmony or the book recommendations of Amazon. Now colleges, eager to get students out the door more efficiently, are awakening to the opportunities of so-called Big Data.?

The new breed of software can predict how well students will do before they even set foot in the classroom. It recommends courses, Netflix-style, based on students? academic records.?

?If the university could model, at a high level, the social network of the college, that would be a very useful data layer,? says Matt Pittinsky, who co-founded Blackboard, a company that provides a platform for online classes, and later became an assistant research professor in the sociology program at Arizona State. A university might reach out to a student ?who is not showing evidence of social integration,? Mr. Pittinsky says, pointing out extracurricular activities and communities that might tie them more deeply to the institution.?

Working with computer scientists, Mr. Pittinsky started an academic research project that tiptoes toward a better understanding of social connections. The research team?s raw material: anonymous logs from swipes made with Arizona State ID cards. When students use these cards, be it to buy food on campus or access the fitness center, the transaction gets recorded. The question that struck Mr. Pittinsky was whether or not you could infer social ties from those trails.?

The prospect of card-swipe surveillance discomforts Mr. Zimmer. He worries authorities might misuse location data to do things like track foreign students or instigators of a student protest.?

But the broader issue of privacy hangs over even less Orwellian efforts to collect and monitor personal data. In his own courses, Michael Zimmer, assistant professor in the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin includes a disclaimer on his syllabus disclosing what he can see through Milwaukee?s online-learning platform, including ?the dates and times individual students access the system, what pages a student has viewed, the duration of visits, and the IP address of the computer used to access the course Web site.?
