Minneapolis shooting victims remembered, mourned

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? A prideful entrepreneur, known at City Hall and recognized by federal leaders for his ingenuity and business spirit. A package deliveryman known for his devotion to his children and the Green Bay Packers. The promising artist with a young family. A quiet outdoorsman who had a big sense of humor.

They were among five victims fatally shot by a fired employee at a Minneapolis sign-making business; the gunman also killed himself. Here are some of the victims' stories:

___

After starting his sign-making business in his basement, Reuven Rahamim spent the next three decades building it into a company praised by local and federal officials. But he was equally devoted to his large family, and especially loved riding bikes with his grandson.

Rahamim grew up on a farm in Israel and served in the Israeli army before coming to the U.S. after the 1973 Arab-Israel War, said his son-in-law, Chad Blumenfield.

The 61-year-old grandfather was devoted to his work and had a passion for developing greener products. But he also loved to cook, entertain friends and spend time with his family, Blumenfield wrote in an email, calling his father-in-law "dedicated, loyal and dearly loved."

Rahamim founded Accent Signage Systems Inc. in the basement of his Minneapolis home in the early 1980s, according to local business publication Finance & Commerce. With a patent for a method of making Braille signs for the blind, the company specializes in signs that meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

Noting that the company's signs hang in the White House and are exported to China, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said Rahamim lived the American dream.

"He is an example of somebody who climbed the ladder of success and didn't pull it up, but tried every way possible to get other people up on that rung, too," Rybak said.

___

UPS deliveryman Keith Basinski was a familiar face on the route that took him to a sign company in a leafy northern Minneapolis neighborhood. Police say he was loading his truck when he was shot.

"He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan said.

The 50-year-old father of two sons and a daughter lived in the northern Twin Cities suburb of Spring Lake Park. His mother, Cleo Basinski, told KARE-TV that he moved to Minnesota to attend Northwestern Bible College, where he graduated. She described him as a gentle spirit and dedicated father.

His son, Brent Basinski, told the Star Tribune newspaper that his father was committed to his job and, as a Wisconsin native, to the Green Bay Packers. Although his dad recently celebrated a milestone birthday, he "was the youngest 50-year-old I've ever known," his son said.

"He had no plans of retiring anytime soon," Brent Basinski said.

Jill Schubert, president of the UPS Northern Plains District, said Basinski had been with the company 29 years, adding: "We are going to miss him very much."

___

Jacob Beneke was an avid sculpture artist and painter, known to friends as "a very cool guy" whose art incorporated recycled material and often made people laugh.

The 34-year-old worked as the digital imaging manager at Accent Signage Systems, according to his Facebook page. He listed his hometown as New Albin, Iowa, and said he studied at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis. He had a wife and young son.

Lorrie Link, who heads the Maple Grove Arts Center, said Beneke's sculptures and paintings stood out, and that he also worked to promote artists in the northwestern Minneapolis suburb.

"He was just a very cool guy," Link said. "He was very creative and expressive. His sculptures and paintings and drawings made us laugh."

Link said Beneke incorporated farm equipment and other used parts into his sculptures, making one called "White Rabbit" out of a chain saw motor.

On a personal website, Beneke talked about his artistic background, saying he went to school to be a graphic designer. He said he later studied traditional bronze sculpture and jewelry in Italy, where he made sculptures out of material left over from the renovation of a 12th-century Tuscan home.

"All my life I have enjoyed building things and the problem solving involved," he said.

___

Ronald Edberg was a quiet outdoorsman with a big sense of humor.

The 58-year-old father had worked for more than a decade in design production at Accent Signage Systems. But in his free time, his daughter said, he loved fishing and hunting.

Jessica Edberg told the Star Tribune that along with her and her brother, her father had a large family. She called her dad an avid outdoorsman.

"He was just a very quiet person, but had a big sense of humor," she said.

She said her family was still in shock about his sudden death.

___

Rami Cooks, 62, was a key figure at Accent Signage, described by former comptroller Meaghan Norlander as owner Reuven Rahimim's right-hand man on day-to-day operations.

"Rami had a big heart, cared about everyone and tried to make everyone feel like a team," Norlander told the Star Tribune.

In a statement, Cooks' family called the Minnetonka man "larger than life."

"Rami was the epitome of a family man who enjoyed nothing more than spending his free time with loved ones," the statement said. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Long-Term Care Insurance And Your Loved One

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Friday, 28 September 2012 07:31 Insurance is a rather common purchase; people buy car insurance, health insurance, homeowner???s insurance, and even renter???s insurance. Long-term care insurance is just as valuable as these other policies, as it is designed to assist families in paying for the costs associated with senior care. he home care professionals at Always Best Care of Alamance, serving Alamance and Guilford Counties, as well as the communities of Burlington, Southern Greensboro, Jamestown, High Point, and Roxboro, know that the cost of elder care can become overwhelming for many families. As such, they encourage you to look into the value that long-term care insurance can provide.

hat Is Long-Term Care Insurance?
Long-term care insurance is exactly what it sounds; this kind of policy covers expenses that are associated with the long-term care of elderly individuals. Oftentimes, the assistance of home care professionals is necessary for an elderly individual to continue aging in place. For this reason, families may decide to call in the services of senior care providers, who assist with daily activities. These activities range from one case to another, but many times encompass grooming, dressing, eating, etc.
While the benefits associated with long-term care insurance vary from one plan to the next, this is the kind of assistance that the plan will, generally, cover.
What Should Your Family Look for in a Policy?
As with any form of insurance, long-term care insurance policies change from one company to the next. Likewise, insurance companies may offer a variety of plans to better meet the needs of a wider range of families. The best thing to do when choosing a policy is to talk with your loved one???s doctor to determine what to anticipate in terms of care. Next, schedule a meeting with an insurance professional to discuss the options available.
Collecting the Benefits of a Long-Term Care Policy
Another topic to discuss with your insurance professional is how to collect the benefits that the policy has to offer. The insurance company your family chooses may require you to submit claims on your own or it may work directly with home care providers. Ask your insurance professional exactly how claims are handled and if you will need to personally do anything to ensure that the benefits are dispersed.
The home care professionals of Always Best Care of Alamance know that long-term care insurance is an important part of a family???s financial plan. They encourage you to talk to your insurance provider about the policy options that are available to your elderly loved one.

Some memorable props used by speakers at the UN

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's use of a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb to convey a message over Iran's disputed nuclear program follows in a long and storied tradition of leaders and diplomats using props to make their points at the United Nations. Here are a few memorable examples:

US shows embassy bug to expose Soviets

In May 1960, U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Soviets of espionage, producing before the Security Council a wooden Great Seal of the United States which had been presented by a group of Russian citizens at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Lodge then extracted a tiny microphone out of the eagle's beak with a pair of tweezers, and said dozens of listening devices had been found in U.S. embassies in communist bloc countries. "From what plays were these props taken and when will it open?" the Soviet delegate responded. Earlier that month, the Soviet Union had shot down an American U-2 spy plane over Russia.

Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe

In October 1960, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev banged his shoe as he interrupted a Philippine delegate making accusations of Soviet imperialism in Eastern Europe. Khrushchev's granddaughter later recalled the Soviet leader had new tight shoes on, which he had taken off when he took his seat. He had started by banging his fists to protest what the Filipino was saying, until his watch fell off. As he went to pick it up, Khrushchev caught sight of his shoes and decided to bang one of them instead. Amid shouting and jeering from Eastern bloc delegates, the assembly president adjourned the meeting, banging his gavel so hard it broke.

Cuban missile crisis photos

During the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson made something of a TV-age breakthrough when he presented to the Security Council photo evidence of a Soviet missile buildup. Stevenson demanded Soviet representative Valerian Zorin answer whether missiles were being installed, memorably adding he was prepared to wait "until hell freezes over" for the response. Zorin, unprepared for so direct a question, could only reply: "I am not in an American courtroom, sir. ... You will have your answer in due course." Stevenson then unveiled blowups of black-and-white aerial photos of Soviet missile installations in Cuba, large enough to make an impression on the TV audience.

Yasser Arafat brings his gun to the U.N.

When Yasser Arafat spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974, Israel was incensed. But for the Palestinian Liberation Organization leader it represented recognition for their struggle for a Palestinian state. To emphasize his revolutionary credentials, Arafat appeared wearing his gun belt and holster, reluctantly removing his pistol before mounting the rostrum. He told the world body, "Today, I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom-fighter's gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

On Iraq war path, Powell shows vial of 'anthrax'

In a speech he would regret, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Feb. 5, 2003, unleashed an 80-minute avalanche of allegations that built the case for war against Iraq. Before a hushed Security Council chamber, Powell played intercepted conversations, showed reconnaissance photos of Iraqi sites, and brought out a replica vial of "anthrax." He accused Iraq of hiding chemical and biological weapons and reviving their nuclear bomb project. He said it posed a grave threat to the world. After the invasion of Iraq, it emerged that reports of Saddam Hussein's WMD program were false.

Bolivia's Morales chews a coca leaf

Bolivian President Evo Morales produced a coca leaf during a March 2009 meeting of the U.N. Committee on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna and proceeded to chew it. "This is a coca leaf. This is not cocaine," said Morales, a former coca farmer, as he argued for its legalization. He told delegates he'd chewed coca intensely for 10 years when he was a farmer and it hadn't diminished his health or abilities. "If I was incapable, I would not be president," he said.

More People Now Watch Web Vids on TVs Than PCs | TechnoBuffalo

Netflix just for kids

Folks, we?ve reached a milestone: For the first time ever, people are more likely to access Internet videos on their TVs than their computers, notes? The Wall Street Journal?s AllThingsD blog.

Last year, says consumer-tracking service?NPD, the figures told a different tale: PCs accounted for 48 percent of online video viewing, with televisions following at 33 percent. Now? One year later, the positions are reversed, with TVs coming in at 45 percent and computers representing 31 percent of viewership.

Why the switch? One word: Netflix. Let?s face it, the online video purveyor is practically everywhere these days, in many of the major electronics, streaming consoles and, yes, televisions.

Says writer?Peter Kafka,??NPD figures that 10 percent of homes now have at least one Internet-enabled TV (though I bet that only a minority of them are actually plugged into the Web), and we?re seeing a steady increase in the use of Web-video peripherals, like Blu-ray players, Apple TVs and Microsoft Xbox 360s.?

According to NPD, viewers are getting their online goodies to their TVs in a variety of ways:

  • 43 percent via connected TVs
  • 47 percent hit up VG consoles (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
  • 62 percent use streaming media players (Roku, Boxee, Apple TV)
  • 38 percent connect hardwire computers to their TVs
  • 21 percent use BD players

How do you watch web videos? Do you tend to watch them on your PC or television? Let us know in the section below.

Electronics that vanish in the environment or the body

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physicians and environmentalists alike could soon be using a new class of electronic devices: small, robust and high performance, yet also biocompatible and capable of dissolving completely in water -- or in bodily fluids.

Researchers at the University of Illinois, in collaboration with Tufts University and Northwestern University, have demonstrated a new type of biodegradable electronics technology that could introduce new design paradigms for medical implants, environmental monitors and consumer devices.

"We refer to this type of technology as transient electronics," said John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Professor of Engineering at the U. of I., who led the multidisciplinary research team. "From the earliest days of the electronics industry, a key design goal has been to build devices that last forever -- with completely stable performance. But if you think about the opposite possibility -- devices that are engineered to physically disappear in a controlled and programmed manner -- then other, completely different kinds of application opportunities open up."

Three application areas appear particularly promising. First are medical implants that perform important diagnostic or therapeutic functions for a useful amount of time and then simply dissolve and resorb in the body. Second are environmental monitors, such as wireless sensors that are dispersed after a chemical spill, that degrade over time to eliminate any ecological impact. Third are consumer electronic systems or sub-components that are compostable, to reduce electronic waste streams generated by devices that are frequently upgraded, such as cellphones or other portable devices.

Transient electronic systems harness and extend various techniques that the Rogers' group has developed over the years for making tiny, yet high performance electronic systems out of ultrathin sheets of silicon. In transient applications, the sheets are so thin that they completely dissolve in a few days when immersed in biofluids. Together with soluble conductors and dielectrics, based on magnesium and magnesium oxide, these materials provide a complete palette for a wide range of electronic components, sensors, wireless transmission systems and more.

The team has built transient transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, temperature and strain sensors, photodetectors, solar cells, radio oscillators and antennas, and even simple digital cameras. All of the materials are biocompatible and, because they are extraordinarily thin, they can dissolve in even minute volumes of water.

The researchers encapsulate the devices in silk. The structure of the silk determines its rate of dissolution -- from minutes, to days, weeks or, potentially, years.

"The different applications that we are considering require different operating time frames," Rogers said. "A medical implant that is designed to deal with potential infections from surgical site incisions is only needed for a couple of weeks. But for a consumer electronic device, you'd want it to stick around at least for a year or two. The ability to use materials science to engineer those time frames becomes a critical aspect in design."

Since the group uses silicon, the industry standard material for integrated circuits, they can make highly sophisticated devices in ways that exploit well-established designs by introducing just a few additional tricks in layout, manufacturing and supporting materials. As reported in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science, the researchers have already demonstrated several system-level devices, including a fully transient 64-pixel digital camera and an implantable applique designed to monitor and prevent bacterial infection at surgical incisions, successfully demonstrated in rats.

Next, the researchers are further refining these and other devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests, and working with a semiconductor foundry to explore high-volume manufacturing possibilities.

"It's a new concept, so there are lots of opportunities, many of which we probably have not even identified yet" Rogers said. "We're very excited. These findings open up entirely new areas of application, and associated directions for research in electronics."

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency supported this work. The Tufts University team was led by Fiorenzo Omenetto; the Northwestern University team was led by Youggang Huang. Rogers is affiliated with the departments of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of mechanical science and engineering, of bioengineering and of electrical and computer engineering, and with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the U. of I.

Chrome for Android update brings Google browser to Intel-powered smartphones

Chrome for Android update brings Google browser to Intelpowered smartphones

While the Motorola RAZR i hasn't yet hit stores, when it does, it'll now be able to tap into the Chrome Mobile app, following its latest update. We're putting the Intel-powered Android 4.0 phone through the review wringer right now, but have already noticed the lack of Chrome browser support.

Due to the way Intel x86-based devices run apps, the browser required some adjustments, which are now complete. At the moment, the only existing phone that officially runs Android 4.0 on a Medfield processor is the incoming RAZR i, but now any future Intel smartphones will also get the full Chrome experience -- and Motorola gets to keep its promise of preinstalling the browser on its new devices.

LaCie's Rugged USB 30 Thunderbolt fast portable storage that can take a beating

LaCie's no stranger to kicking out portable HDDs that are a-okay with getting kicked around, and the Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series is no exception. As the extended title implies, this one is equipped to transfer files via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, and it'll play nice with Mac and Windows platforms. The LaCie Rugged SSD offers up transfer rates as high as 380MB/sec -- a feat we came darn close to hitting ourselves in testing -- and the HDD variants claim up to 110MB/sec. The bantam drive is entirely bus-powered, and it's engineered to shake off drops of up to four feet. Interesting? Both models should be shipping shortly, with the 1TB HDD edition going for $249.99 and the 120GB SSDer for $199.99.

What's missing from pro-gay marriage TV ads? Gays

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? In one TV ad, a husband and wife talk fondly of a lesbian couple who moved into their neighborhood. In another, a married couple speaks of wanting fair treatment for their lesbian daughter. A third features a pastor talking supportively about gay unions.

Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What's missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.

Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as "Modern Family" and "Glee," the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.

The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.

"If we don't show ourselves, people aren't going to get comfortable with who we are," said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group "Truth Wins Out," one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.

But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.

"The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross," said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. "Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it's something you can't do in a TV ad," said Szekeres, who is gay.

The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.

Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.

Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it's OK to be gay.

Gay activists who have worked on the marketing campaigns say that in this battle for public opinion, it's better for gays to stay in the background.

"The simple truth is that we are trying to win over the people that are not yet with us," said Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Mainers United for Marriage, which is pushing the ballot measure to legalize gay marriage in that state. "I'm a gay man, and the general rule of thumb for me is that an ad that meets my emotional needs is not necessarily the thing that's going to change a typical voter's mind about gay or lesbian people."

A May 2011 poll by the Pew Research Center found growing acceptance of gay people on a number of fronts, but still plenty of doubts. Fifty-eight percent of poll respondents said gays should be accepted in society compared to 33 percent who said they shouldn't. More people thought gays raising children was bad for society rather than good, though the largest number of respondents were neutral on the question. The same poll found 45 percent support for gay marriage rights, up from 35 percent just two years earlier.

The first ad broadcast by Minnesotans United for All Families, which is trying to defeat the state's proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage, is aimed at parents. It features Kim and John Canny ? two straight Catholics, Republicans and parents of three daughters from a Minneapolis suburb who discuss coming around to support gay marriage after a lesbian couple with an adopted son moved into their neighborhood.

The lesbian couple is briefly glimpsed in the ad, but not heard from.

Alexander Zachary, a gay man from Minneapolis, complained that the ads he's seen reflect an "antiquated mindset."

"This isn't San Francisco in 1973, where all the gay people live in one neighborhood and all the straight people live everywhere else," he said. "We're not this hidden culture anymore, so why act like it?"

Richard Carlbom, manager of the Minnesota campaign, declined to say if future Minnesota United ads would feature gay people. Upcoming ads will "articulate why gay people want to get married," he said.

Many straight people "are on a journey on this issue, and the most effective way to encourage them is to show them other people who have taken the same journey," and come to accept gay marriage, Carlbom said.

Bil Browning, a Washington, D.C., gay activist and writer, recently called a straights-only ad that ran in Washington state "a heterosexual snoozefest" on his blog. He pointed out that gay activists seem to be using the strategy even though they've yet to win a campaign. In the 32 states where the issue has been on a statewide ballot, gay marriage advocates have lost every time.

"Maybe it's time to reevaluate these strategies and include our families, actual LGBT people," Browning said. "We're never going to win if we can't show our faces. It looks like we have something to hide, and we don't."

'Cult fiction' dates to ancient Egypt priest

A recently deciphered Egyptian papyrus from around 1,900 years ago tells a fictional story that includes drinking, singing, feasting and ritual sex, all in the name of the goddess Mut.?

Researchers believe that a priest wrote the blush-worthy tale, as a way to discuss controversial ritual sex acts with other priests.

"Our text may represent a new and hitherto unrecognized Egyptian literary genre: 'cult' fiction, the purpose of which was to allow controversial or contentious matters pertaining to the divine cult to be scrutinized in this way," wrote professors Richard Jasnow and Mark Smith, who published their translation and analysis of the papyrus in the most recent edition of the journal Enchoria.

Jasnow, from Johns Hopkins University, and Smith, from Oxford, write that evidence of ritual sex is? rare in ancient Egypt and the act probably would have been controversial. "There is surprisingly little unequivocal Egyptian evidence for the performance of the sex act as such in ritual contexts," Jasnow and Smith wrote. [ The Sex Quiz: Myths, Taboos & Bizarre Facts ]

They added that the Egyptians were known to discuss other controversial matters using fictional stories.

Writing about sex
Containing writing in a form of ancient Egyptian known as Demotic, the papyrus is likely to have originated in the Fayum village of Tebtunis at a time when the Romans controlled Egypt. It is currently in Florence, Italy, in the Istituto Papirologico "G. Vitelli."

The newly deciphered tale refers several times to having sex. At one point a speaker implores a person to "drink truly. Eat truly. Sing" and to "don clothing, anoint (yourself), adorn the eyes, and enjoy sexual bliss." The speaker adds that Mut will not let you "be distant from drunkenness on any day. She will not allow you to be lacking in any (manner)."

The speaker defends his views by saying, "As for those who have called me evil, Mut will 'call' them evil."

Researchers know the story is fictional because it employs an Egyptian noun used only in fiction to mark separate sections of a story. ?

The full story
Reconstructing the overall plot narrative of the papyrus is tricky.

The text is fragmentary, and researchers cannot be certain how the full story unfolded.

"Conceivably, we have here the remains of an account of how an adherent of the goddess Mut persuaded another individual to devote himself to her worship or join in her rites," the researchers write.

?

This "cult fiction" interpretation of the papyrus is backed up by the Greek writer Herodotus, who lived more than 2,400 years ago. He wrote that "it was the Egyptians who first made it a matter of religious observance not to have intercourse with women in temples, nor enter a temple after such intercourse without washing." (That translation is from "Herodotus Volume 1," Harvard University Press, 1990.)

For some ancient Egyptians, the idea of mixing sex and religion may have been extreme, a problem priests discussed by way of a fictional story.

Smith declined an interview request, telling LiveScience that everything the researchers wanted to say is in the journal article. He did add that new fragments of the papyrus recently were discovered, and they may allow for more of the story to be deciphered.
