'Girls': The Reviews Are In!

Critics praise HBO show while questioning whether it will connect beyond urban audiences.
By John Mitchell

Lena Dunham in "Girls"
Photo: HBO

HBO's new comedy "Girls" is easily the most buzzed-about series debut so far this year. From the almost uncomfortably realistic sex scenes and sharp dialogue to series creator/producer/writer/star Lena Dunham's Louis C.K.-style multitasking — not to mention the show's similarities to and differences from that other landmark show about four single females in New York — people cannot stop talking about "Girls." Luckily for everyone involved, most of the things being said range from good to rave.

"Girls," which premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO, has critics using words like "groundbreaking" and "revolutionary" to describe the series, about four friends (Dunham and co-stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet) in their early 20s trying to get their lives off the ground in NYC.

Here in the MTV Newsroom, we're as enraptured with the show as everyone else seems to be, but in her otherwise rave review in Salon, Willa Paskin makes an observation about "Girls" that has come up often during chatter about the new series: that its specificity, minus the fantasy element that made middle America fall in love with "Sex and the City," may make the show unrelatable to those outside East Coast urban centers.

"My concern was that 'Girls' speaks so specifically and accurately to the experience of me and my census buddies — and to be clear, that's urban white girls with safety nets; have at us in the comments — that people would either write it off as navel-gazing, snark at the innate privilege undergirding the whole thing, or find it unrelatable," Paskin writes.

That concern doesn't diminish the show's quality, though, and the site goes on to call the show "smart, bracing, funny, accurately absurd, confessional yet self-aware."

"Few series come out of the box as brilliant as 'Girls' does," Tim Goodman rhapsodizes in The Hollywood Reporter. "The new HBO series from Lena Dunham ('Tiny Furniture') is one of the most original, spot-on, no-missed-steps series in recent memory. For her part, Dunham, who writes, directs, stars in, created and executive produces the series, is a talent as unique and refreshing to the medium as Louis C.K. — high praise indeed, as FX's 'Louie' is one of the most critically acclaimed series on television."

Sex factors heavily in "Girls," but unlike the glamorized romps we saw on its HBO foremother "SATC," the sex acts depicted here are graphic, button-pushing and realistic but not gratuitous. According to Verne Gay in Newsday, the sex serves as a visual manifestation of the characters' internal issues. In a four-star review, Gay writes, "Hannah [Dunham's character] and the show are all about internal conflict and so is the humor, while sex — and fair warning, it's pretty graphic here, which may be the handiwork of Apatow — is the metaphor for all that conflict. It's grotesque, malignant, unpleasurable and a particularly devious torture chamber, at least for the women, who still submit to it."

The Los Angeles Times isn't as unconditional in its praise, calling the show "nothing short of revolutionary" but "hard to love." "There is a cool cleverness to the show that is both attractive and off-putting," Mary McNamara writes. "The characters are flawed and hyper-aware of their flaws, the stories so bent on covering every angle of self-examination that there is no real role for the viewer to play. Which makes watching it an intellectual rather than emotional experience."

The show positions itself as being a far more realistic version of the girls in the big city trope that "SATC" glamorized, which the Atlantic Wire's Richard Lawson sees as a reflection of the times the two shows premiered in. " 'SATC' was fantasy and fable, with a few bits of relatable relationship stuff thrown to the commoners like chum. 'Girls' is something else; it's a very particular, very of the moment dissection of mundanely funny minutiae, of boredom and anxiety in these brownly grim times," Lawson writes. "Though I guess it's possible the difference really is merely generational — the rich late '90s gave us Sex, while the wobbly '10s give us Girls, a witty and occasionally touching glimpse into our immediate neighbors' lives. They've got something here, it just remains to be seen how big a thing it is."

That "Girls" could be the next big things seems like the consensus opinion of critics, but will this story of a group of friends struggling to discover themselves and succeed in the big city connect with audiences in Peoria, Illinois? Lawson seems to think it may. "Who knows, it could be that soon enough young women the nation over will be saying they're 'such a Hannah' or 'totally a Marnie,' " he writes. "Maybe fabulous is officially out. Maybe the new aspiration in these punishing times is, simply, to aspire."

Are you excited for the series premiere of "Girls" Sunday on HBO? Let us know if you'll be watching in the comments below!

Time Warner and Verizon begin selling bundled packages just to annoy regulators

Time Warner and Verizon begin selling
Verizon's special relationship with the cable houses deepened yesterday as it started to sell bundled mobile and land-line packages with Time Warner Cable, like it does with Comcast. Residents in various parts of Ohio, Kansas City and Raleigh, North Carolina can sign up and receive a $200 prepaid debit card as a reward for their custom. However, the partnership is raising regulatory concerns about Big Red's business practices, with the Justice Department weighing up if they're anti-competitive. Worse still, the FCC has yet to ratify that $3.6 billion spectrum deal, meaning that both parties could still be off to the tailors to be fitted for a federal lawsuit.

Marc Anthony Files For Divorce From Jennifer Lopez

Almost nine months after their separation, Marc Anthony has filed for divorce from Jennifer Lopez in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this week.

The catch-all "irreconcilable differences" box was checked.

Anthony's filing seeks joint legal and physical custody of the couple's twins, Emme and Max, 4, and that the judge dismiss any spousal support for Lopez.

Should she ask for it, that is, which is doubtful. This is likely a formality to make legal a split that has for all intents and purposes been settled already.

J. Lo and Marc

The duo married in 2004 and announced their breakup in July, but seem to have kept things amicable, at least when it comes to their reality show, Q'Viva!

Both have had relatively little to say about it publicly, but Anthony spoke out about the split afterward, and according to him, "It wasn't shocking."

It wasn't long before they moved on, either.

Marc has started dating a 24-year-old Venezuelan model Shannon De Lima and Lopez has become inseparable with backup dancer Casper Smart.

Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken - Eat. Drink. Love.

You know how when you go out of town for a long weekend, then drive back to your house and then feel like doing absolutely nothing? Yeah, that was me yesterday after we finally got home last night. I wanted to put on jammies, order in, and relax. But nooo, we had to go to the grocery store (which you know I do not enjoy) because we had no food in the house, and worst of all, it was dinner time. Oh Lordy. The grocery store was out of control. We could barely find a place to park. There were people everywhere. And the produce section was wiped clean. Couldn?t get green onion, couldn?t get cilantro, couldn?t get good strawberries. WHY?! It?s like there is really nothing to do in this town except go to the grocery store.

And after a long day at work today, another slow cooker recipe was definitely in order. Hubs loves to order Chinese, but I don?t like to order it very often as it is not the healthiest thing to order. I?ve been wanting to try some new Chinese recipes that I can make at home. I love sesame chicken and I love honey chicken. What better idea than to combine the two?! This version skips the heavy breading and you can tweak the sauce to meet your needs. I used a little honey, low sodium soy sauce, and reduced sugar ketchup. Serve this chicken over rice, quinoa, noodles, and/or veggies!

Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 1/3 cup honey (1/2 cup for sweeter sauce)
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbs. ketchup
  • 2 tbs. diced white onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbs. sesame oil
  • 1 tbs. canola oil
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbs. cornstarch dissolved in water (2 tbs. for thicker sauce)
  • salt and pepper
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Place into the slow cooker. In a bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, oils, ketchup, onion, garlic, red pepper flakes. Pour the mixture over the chicken. Cook the chicken on high for approximately 1 1/2 hours on high or 3 hours on low.
  2. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker. Pour the cornstarch dissolved in water into the sauce. Stir, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  3. Cut the chicken into bite size pieces. Place the chicken back into the slow cooker and stir into the sauce to coat. Add additional salt and pepper if needed. Serve over rice, noodles, and/or steamed veggies. Sprinkle the top of the chicken with some sesame seeds.

Security scare of the week: What can an app with no permissions do?

Security is serious business

The latest in the never-ending story of Android security is out, and this time it's talking about what an app can access if it declares no permissions. (To put it another way, what all an application can see if it doesn't request any of the normal functionality apps request.) Some folks make it out to be nothing to worry about, others use it in their quest to damnify the world's most popular mobile phone OS, but we figure the best thing to do with it is explain what's happening.

A group of security researchers set out to create an app that declares no permissions to find out exactly what sort of information they could get out of from the Android system it was running on. This sort of thing is done every day, and the more popular the target is, the more people are looking at it. We actually want them to do this sort of thing, and from time to time folks find things that are critical and need fixed. Everybody benefits.

This time around, they found that an app with no (as in none, nada, zilch) permissions could do three very interesting things. None are serious, but all are worth looking at a bit. We'll start with the SD card.

Any app can read data on your SD card. It's always been this way, and it will always be this way. (Writing to the SD card is what needs a permission.) Utilities are available to create secure, hidden folders and protect them from other apps, but by default any data written to the SD card is there for any app to see. This is by design, as we want to allow our computer to access all the data on shareable partitions (like SD cards) when we plug them in. Newer versions of Android use a different partitioning method and a different way to share data that moves away from this, but then we all get to bitch about using MTP. (Unless you're Phil, but he's a little nuts at likes MTP.) This is an easy fix -- don't put sensitive data on your SD card. Don't use apps that put sensitive data on your SD card. Then quit worrying about programs being able to see data they are supposed to be able to see.

The next thing they found is really interesting if you're a geek -- an can read the /data/system/packages.list file with no explicit permission. This poses no threat on its own, but knowing what applications a user has installed is a great way to know what exploits may be useful to compromise their phone or tablet. Think of vulnerabilities in other apps -- the example the researchers used was Skype. Knowing that an exploit exists it's there means an attacker could try to target it. It's worth mentioning that targeting a known insecure app would probably require some permissions to do so, though. (And it's also worth reminding folks that Skype quickly acknowledged and fixed its permissions issue.)

Finally, they discovered that the /proc directory gives a bit of data when queried. Their example shows that they can read things like the Android ID, kernel version, and ROM version. There's a lot more that can be found in the /proc directory, but we need to remember that /proc isn't a real file system. Look at yours with root explorer -- it's full of 0-byte files that are created at runtime, and is designed for apps and software to communicate with the running kernel. There is no real sensitive data stored there, and it's all erased and rewritten when the phone is power cycled. If you are worried that someone might be able to find your kernel version or 16 digit Android ID, you still have the hurdle of getting that information sent anywhere without explicit Internet permissions.

We're glad that people are digging in deep to find these sort of issues, and while these aren't critical by any serious definition, it's good to make Google aware of them. Researchers doing this sort of work can only make things safer and better for all of us. And we need to stress the point that the fellows at Leviathan aren't talking doom and gloom, they are just presenting facts in a useful way -- the doom and gloom is coming from outside sources.

Press Select: Gaming of 2012 | The Mace & Crown

Posted on 11 April 2012.

2011 was a good year to be a gamer, but can the same be said about this year? It can be hard to gauge an entire year from the beginning, but by looking at some of the titles announced for 2012 and the hype behind them, we can at least get excited about our personal anticipations. Some of these titles are well known and are destined to do well, while some are more of a risk.

Some might know about Blizzard?s stake on the gaming world, but for those who may have missed the news, ?Diablo 3? has finally been given a release date of April 15. This game has been in production since 2007 and is finally coming out this year. Fans of the ?Diablo? series are sure to enjoy this iteration with new classes such as the Demon Hunter, the Monk and the Witch Doctor and returning classes like the Barbarian. Blizzard seems quite excited about this sequel and being the company they are, they always put out a polished game.

Gearbox?s ?Borderlands 2? promises to have ?870 bajillion more guns,? ?1000 degrees hotter,? and ?96.5 percent more ?wub wub?? As ludicrous as this sounds,?Borderlands,? is a game based on crazy statistics. There are new classes and apparently a lot more guns. The joke about that is the guns have randomly generated statistics, so the chances are innumerable. ?Wub wub? apparently has to do with Gearbox?s new fascination with the popular dubstep music genre. Sept. 18 will be known as the day of crazy numbers.

?The Last of Us,? to be presented by Naughty Dog, is definitely going to be a triple-A title. A post-apocalyptic adventure game where the focus is more on the survivors than the zombies/mutants/what have you. From the makers of ?Uncharted,? Naughty Dog knows how to set a stage and tell a story. The most interesting part of the game is the scarcity of ammunition and guns. A survival game doesn?t do its job very well if the player doesn?t feel threatened because he has a small arsenal in their pocket. If anyone can make a more realistic survival-horror game, it?s Naughty Dog. The day of the apocalypse hasn?t been announced yet, but it will apparently be some time in 2012.

Firaxis came back from the dead to make ?Xcom: Enemy Unknown.? With the first-person-shooter simply named ?Xcom? coming out in the same year, some fans of the old series were upset by the change in direction; changing from a tactical game to a first-person-shooter. To appease these fans, Firaxis stepped in to make a more accurate sequel of the ?90s games. Of course both games have their fans, but being that the tactics market has been very small lately, ?Enemy Unknown? could very well reboot the series, or at least to the hopes of some of us. In the fall of 2012, aliens and super cool agents will fight over Earth.

Another triple-A title every gamer should be looking forward to is ?Assassin?s Creed 3.? Finally departing from Ezio?s timeline, the overarching story will continue and will most likely answer many questions. The game will follow an assassin named Connor in the times of colonial America. There hasn?t been many details revealed, but the developers promise the change of setting, being from large cities to small colonies with huge forests in between, will be an exciting change of pace, altering the gameplay with a breath of fresh air. The answers to ?The Truth? will be revealed on Oct. 30.

2012 has some good hype to it, but will the games live up to it? I guess we won?t find out until we are knee deep in games. If all goes according to plan, my readers, I will give you my review or all of the previously mentioned games and you can decide for yourself if they are worth it. So, here?s to a new year in gaming.

Stocks, oil swoon on anxiety over economy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street's recent sell-off accelerated on Tuesday, with the benchmark S&P posting its worst day in four months, stung by worries about slowing economic growth, and oil prices suffered their biggest percentage decline this year on worries about weakening demand from China.

Signs of a cooling U.S. recovery after Friday's release of disappointing data on jobs creation in March and the euro zone's festering debt crisis fueled a view of tepid global growth, stoking safety bids for gold as well as U.S. and German government debt.

Oil prices closed down below $120 a barrel in London after China, the world's second largest oil consumer, reported a decline in imports of crude oil in March, raising concerns about its oil demand and a slowdown in the Chinese economy.

The pullback on Wall Street came on the cusp of the first-quarter earnings season, with U.S. aluminum giant Alcoa kicking off the reporting season after the bell.

"We've clearly seen a major slowdown in earnings, which are dependent on global growth now that profit margins have stopped expanding, and global growth isn't great right now with all the issues in Europe," said Jim McDonald, chief investment strategist at Northern Trust Global Investments in Chicago, which has about $650 billion in assets under management.

All three major stock indexes fell below key support levels, and 80 percent of shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market ended lower.

The S&P 500 fell below its 50-day moving average of 1,372.30, an area viewed as a significant support level that will make or break the current uptrend.

"Dropping below that level suggests a loss of momentum, and it looks pretty widespread," said Katie Stockton, chief market technician at MKM Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut, adding that the S&P 500 could fall to about 1,350 before finding a new level of support.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> lost 213.66 points, or 1.65 percent, to 12,715.93 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 23.61 points, or 1.71 percent, to 1,358.59. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> tumbled 55.86 points, or 1.83 percent, to 2,991.22.

During the current downdraft, the S&P has lost 4 percent and hit its lowest level in a month. It touched a four-year high last Monday and is still up 8 percent for the year to date.

Apple had initially bucked the day's downward trend but later reversed course. Its shares hit a new high of $644, driving its market capitalization to briefly top $600 billion, before turning lower to end down 1.2 percent at $628.44. <.n/>

After the market closed, Dow component Alcoa Inc. , which is considered a bellwether for the industrial sector, reported a profit for the first quarter, beating expectations of a quarterly loss. Prior to its earnings announcement, Alcoa's shares closed down 3.0 percent at $9.31.

European shares hit a 10-week low on Tuesday on the first trading day after the four-day Easter weekend. Financials, miners, automakers and energy sectors bore the brunt of the sell-off, reacting to Friday's weak U.S. jobs report and data released on Tuesday showing no growth in France's economy in the first quarter. <.eu/>

The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares finished down 2.48 percent at 1.026.15 points. The index has fallen more than 7 percent since hitting an eight-month high in mid-March and is up just 2.7 percent so far this year.

The broad weakness in equities knocked the MSCI global stock index <.miwd00000pus> down for a sixth consecutive session. It lost 1.5 percent and fell to its lowest level since early February.

In the currency market, the euro fell 0.2 percent versus the dollar to $1.3082, near a one-month low of $1.3033 set on Monday. Against the yen, the euro was down 1.2 percent at 105.55 yen after an earlier low of 105.46 yen - its lowest level against the yen since February 22.

Both Spanish and Italian yields spreads over German Bunds widening, extending their moves from last week when the U.S. jobs numbers added to concerns about the global economic outlook. The rising risk premiums on Spanish and Italian debt reflect renewed worries about the ability of Italy and Spain, the euro zone's third and fourth biggest economies, to repay their loans.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes last traded up 18/32 in price with a yield of 1.982 percent, the lowest level in about four weeks.

German Bund futures were up 1.25 percentage points at 140.40, their highest level since March 7.

In oil trading, Brent crude settled down 2.27 percent at $119.88. U.S. oil fell $1.44 or 1.4 percent to $101.02 a barrel.

Spot gold clung to gains in choppy trading. It was last up 1.1 percent at $1,658.19 an ounce.

China March crude imports 3rd highest ever, but momentum easing

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's imports of crude oil eased in March from a record level hit in February but were the third highest ever, at 5.55 million barrels per day (bpd), as refiners in the world's second-largest consumer rebuilt stocks.

Imports are, however, expected to slow further over coming months as oil firms start to take a breather from their recent restocking spree, while high oil prices restrain purchases.

China imported 23.55 million metric tonnes of crude, up 8.7 percent from a year ago but down from February's record of 5.95 million bpd, preliminary data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Tuesday.

With a string of major refiners having already shut their plants for maintenance since March, the strong imports suggest refiners were rebuilding inventories following a steady decline in stocks since the fourth quarter last year.

Commercial crude oil stocks in China fell 3.77 percent by the end of February from a month earlier, official news agency Xinhua said last month.

Imports may also have been buoyed by government stockpiling, as China moves toward the completion of its second phase of strategic petroleum reserves, which have a total capacity of 170 million barrels.

However, shipments are expected to slow over the coming months, with a long list of the country's top refiners having already shut their plants for scheduled maintenance.

"Fundamentally, Chinese demand, especially diesel and petrochemicals, does not support this pace of crude oil imports. Refiners will remain in the red importing at this price," said a Chinese crude oil trader.

"$120 a barrel (for Brent) is a very high price. I don't think there is a strong momentum to build stocks at this price," he said, adding that the March shipments were mostly cargoes booked in the first half of February before prices spiked.

Despite the strong import figures, oil prices slipped below $122 on Tuesday, as the steeper than expected fall in China's overall imports in March, which suggests slowing domestic demand, raised concerns about oil demand growth.

For the first quarter, crude imports rose 11.4 percent on the year to 5.66 million bpd, a pace much stronger than the rise of 6 percent for all of 2011, bolstered by new crude processing units started late in 2011 and run near full swing in recent months.

Refinery run poll:

FALLING REFINERY RUNS

China's top oil refiners, including PetroChina and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, were seen to have cut production in March to the lowest in 31 months on the back of poor margins, a Reuters poll showed.

They will trim crude oil throughput further to a 35-month low in April, a Reuters poll showed this week, as maintenance remains heavy amid ongoing refining losses despite a fuel price hike last month.

To help trim refiners' losses, Beijing raised gasoline and diesel prices by 6 to 7 percent on March 20, in a second hike this year, which took fuel prices to a record high.

China's net oil product imports were 1.86 million metric tonnes in March, up 43 percent from a year earlier and up 4.5 percent from February.

Diesel demand in China typically picks up in April during the spring planting season, with refiners building diesel stocks early in the year in anticipation of a large spring draw.

"Over January and February 2012, diesel inventories built by 560,000 bpd on average, which should be more than adequate to cover typical spring draws of some 200,000 bpd over March to May," according to a JP Morgan research note on Monday

"We would not expect a spike in Chinese diesel imports."

China will release refinery production data on Friday, with the final set of import and export data due on April 21.

(AP) ? U.S. coal exports reached their highest level in two decades last year as strong demand from Asia and Europe offered an outlet for a fuel that is falling from favor at home.

U.S. Department of Energy data analyzed by The Associated Press reveal that coal exports topped 107 million tons of fuel worth almost $16 billion in 2011. That's the highest level since 1991, and more than double the export volume from 2006.

Much of the increase went to slake the thirst of power-hungry markets in Asia, where rapid development has sparked what mining company Peabody Energy calls a "global coal super cycle" that heralds renewed interest in the fuel.

The AP's analysis showed coal exports to South Korea leapt 81 percent last year to more than 10 million tons. India saw a 65 percent jump, to 4.5 million tons. And Japan bought almost 7 million tons of U.S. coal last year ? a 119 percent increase ? as the nation sought alternatives to nuclear power after an earthquake and tsunami prompted the Fukushima nuclear complex meltdown.

King Coal faces a tougher outlook in the U.S., where competition from cheap natural gas and costly new rules for power plants are eroding its historic dominance in electricity generation.

Coal's share of the domestic power supply has fallen by more than 20 percent in the past several years, forcing companies to search out new customers or risk having to cut production from U.S. mines that produced almost 1.1 billion tons last year.

Government projections released Tuesday said domestic power sector demand for could dip another 10 percent in 2012. That would drive total U.S. coal use below a billion tons annually for only the second time since 1995.

Utilities burn almost all the coal consumed in the U.S. to produce electricity.

"There's no question that our supplies of coal are adequate. The question is, how do we find new markets for coal to keep the share of electricity generation strong?" said Luke Popovich with the National Mining Association. "While its use is relatively declining here, it is absolutely soaring in most other places."

Exports also were up to Brazil, China and several European nations seeking high-quality coal for steelmaking, according to the Energy Department data.

The Energy Department forecasts exports to drop slightly over the next two years, then slowly climb to about 130 million tons annually by 2030. Countries worldwide consume more than 6 billion tons of coal annually.

Companies including Arch Coal Inc. have offered far more optimistic scenarios under which exports continue to grow rapidly. St. Louis-based Arch has predicted export capacity could reach 245 million tons by 2015.

To make that happen, companies want new or expanded coal ports on the West and Gulf coasts.

Pending proposals in Washington state would add tens of millions of tons of port capacity for coal that would be mined from the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming.

Port expansions also are envisioned along the East Coast and in Texas, where Kinder Morgan Energy Partners plans to invest $140 million to expand a coal terminal in Houston.

"The U.S. has lots of coal. It has a wonderful rail infrastructure. But the piece of the logistical puzzle that is weakest is terminals. To get to the next level of growth, the new terminals need to be built," said Jim Orchard, vice president of Wyoming-based Cloud Peak Energy.

Cloud Peak exported 4.7 million tons to Asia last year from its Spring Creek mine near the Montana-Wyoming border ? an increase of 42 percent from 2010. Orchard added that the only way export demand would dry up would be if economic growth in China and India came to an abrupt halt.

But many of the port plans are being challenged by the industry's long-time opponents.

Environmentalists who filed dozens of lawsuits over the last decade to block new coal plants in the U.S. have turned new attention to export proposals in recent months. They fear any pollution reductions from reduced domestic coal use could be lost if the fuel is simply burned elsewhere.

"I don't think it's inevitable," said Lindsay Taylor with RE Sources for Sustainable Communities, a Bellingham, Wash. group working against a proposed 48-million-ton coal port in nearby Cherry Point.

"Coal is what the American economy was built on, but what we foresee is a future without coal," she said.

The industry faces another challenge from coal-producing countries such as Australia, which has also tapped into the new demand from Asia.

Over the last two years, flooding and other problems hampered Australia's coal exports and provided an opening for U.S. companies. As Australia works past those problems, analysts say it's uncertain how much room will be left for American competitors.

"High demand by China has rippled through the markets. It's really an issue of how long this demand is going to last," said Bill Watson, an analyst with the Energy Information Administration. "The prices have been very high, so anybody who can mine and ship coal certainly has a lot of incentive to do that."

AT&T to sell most of Yellow Pages to Cerberus

(AP) ? AT&T Inc. on Monday said it agreed to sell a majority stake in its Yellow Pages business to the private-equity firm Cerberus Capital for $950 million.

The sale is part of AT&T's strategy to jettison shrinking parts of its business so it can focus on segments that are growing, particularly its wireless business. Revenue from the Yellow Pages unit has shrunk 30 percent in two years, as consumers continue to shun phone books in favor of the Web.

Phone books were once a cash cow, generating reliable profits as businesses paid for ads that were right under consumer's finger tips as they were looking for local stores and services. Even with the steep revenue decline, AT&T's Yellow Pages unit has been profitable before impairment charges for the last three years.

Profitable but shrinking businesses generally sit poorly with public companies who want to show shareholders that they're growing. Private-equity firms don't have to please public shareholders and are happy to make money from dwindling assets.

AT&T, the country's largest phone company, is following in the footsteps of Verizon Communications Inc., the second-largest, in cutting its exposure in the phone book business. Verizon spun off its directory business to shareholders in 2006, only to see it file for bankruptcy three years later.

Cerberus is paying AT&T $750 million in cash and a $200 million note, plus a 47 percent stake in YP Holdings LLC which will oversee the business.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett said the sale price was low relative to Yellow Pages' earnings, but the deal is still a sensible one for AT&T, in terms of its strategy.

The sale affects 8,400 employees, and is expected to close mid-year. AT&T said it expects it to have a minimal effect on this year's earnings.

Shares of Dallas-based AT&T fell 30 cents, or 1 percent, to $30.64 in morning trading Monday, in line with a decline in the broader market.

The assets being sold include 1,200 printed Yellow Pages editions in 22 states, plus websites like Yellowpages.com and a mobile app. Together, they generated revenue of $3.3 billion last year, about 3 percent of AT&T's overall revenue.

The sale excludes the recently formed AT&T AdWorks, which sells advertising offerings across online, mobile and TV.

Marlins' Ozzie Guillen apologizes over Castro flap

MIAMI (AP) ? A contrite Ozzie Guillen sat in the heart of Little Havana seeking forgiveness for what the Miami Marlins manager called the biggest mistake of his life ? saying he admired Fidel Castro.

This wasn't some offhanded insult about a sports writer, the type of thing that got the outspoken Guillen in trouble in Chicago. This was personal to the fan base that the Marlins rely on so much that they built their new stadium in the middle of the city's Cuban-American neighborhood.

Castro is the sworn enemy of those fans.

So after being suspended for five games Tuesday, the Marlins manager tried to quell the tempest.

"I'm here on my knees to apologize," Guillen said.

"I'm very sorry about the problem, what happened. I will do everything in my power to make it better. ... When you make a mistake like this, you can't sleep."

A chastened Guillen, who has a history of polarizing comments about gays and immigrants, among others, spoke without a script and made no disclaimers. He said he'll do whatever he can to repair relations with Cuban-Americans angered by his praise of the Cuban dictator, remarks he said he didn't mean.

Guillen, who is Venezuelan, told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects the retired Cuban leader for staying in power so long. In response, at least two Miami politicians said Guillen should lose his job. Callers on Spanish-language radio in Miami agreed and 100 demonstrators picketed Marlins Park toting signs like "NO APOLOGIES FIRE HIM NOW."

"He is full with hypocrisy," said Luis Martinez, who has lived in Miami since the late 1950s. "I don't accept any kind of pardon from him. They should get him out."

The team didn't consider firing Guillen or asking him to resign five games into his tenure, Marlins president David Samson said.

Guillen was hired to help usher in a new baseball era for the Marlins, saddled in recent years with mediocre teams and worse attendance. The team was to rely on South Florida's large Cuban-American population to help rebuild its fan base with the $634 million ballpark that opened last week.

At the hourlong news conference Tuesday morning, there was little evidence of Guillen's roguish charm or quick wit, which have made him a favorite with fans and reporters since he became a major league manager in 2004. Speaking somberly, he took full responsibility for his comments, but said they were misinterpreted by Time's reporter.

"It was a personal mistake of the thing I had in my mind and what I said," Guillen said in Spanish. "What I wanted to say in Spanish, I said in English in a wrong way."

Guillen said he doesn't love or admire Castro.

"I was saying I cannot believe somebody who hurt so many people over the years is still alive," he said.

Time said Tuesday it stands by its story.

Guillen said the uproar he created has left him sad, embarrassed and feeling stupid. He said he accepted the team's punishment.

"When you're a sportsman, you shouldn't be involved with politics," he said.

"I'm going to be a Miami guy for the rest of my life. I want to walk in the street with my head up and feel not this bad, the way I feel now."

Cuban-born Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, a former manager of the Marlins, said he watched some of the news conference and could tell it was difficult for Guillen.

"He came out and faced the music," Gonzalez said. "It's going to take awhile, but hopefully he can win those people back somehow."

Guillen has gotten in trouble before on issues ranging from sexual orientation to illegal immigration. Just last week, he boasted about getting drunk after games.

Those episodes quickly faded. But on South Florida's scale of political incorrectness, praise for Castro is a home run, and it was unclear how long it would take for anger toward Guillen to subside.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said the remarks "have no place in our game" and were "offensive to an important part of the Miami community and others throughout the world."

"As I have often said, baseball is a social institution with important social responsibilities," Selig added in a statement. "All of our 30 clubs play significant roles within their local communities, and I expect those who represent Major League Baseball to act with the kind of respect and sensitivity that the game's many cultures deserve."

Marlins officials said Guillen still had the support of the organization.

"We believe in him," said Samson, the team president. "We believe in his apology. We believe everybody deserves a second chance." He said he expected no further punishment from MLB.

Guillen apologized over the weekend after his remarks were published in Time, then left his team in Philadelphia, where the Marlins were playing the Phillies, and flew to Miami.

The teams resume their three-game series Wednesday in Philadelphia. Guillen said he'll be there to apologize to his players, but he won't be in the dugout. Bench coach Joey Cora will be the interim manager.

"The Marlins acknowledge the seriousness of the comments attributed to Guillen," read a statement from the team. "The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized, especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship."

The suspension, which takes effect immediately, recalled the punishment given to Marge Schott, the late owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Schott so embarrassed baseball in the 1990s with her inflammatory racial remarks and fond recollections of Adolf Hitler that she was suspended from ownership duties for a season.

"After spending years of my life with Ozzie Guillen, I can honestly say he has never been this apologetic," tweeted former slugger Frank Thomas, who played for Guillen with the Chicago White Sox. "I know he is really hurting inside for what he said. If you really know him this was not his intentions at all."

In Cuba, the evening newscast aired an interview by Venezuela-based Telesur with Emilio Garcia, a Cuban journalist in Miami.

"It is another sad page in the history of this community (Miami) that more and more is transforming into a banana republic," Garcia said. "It was pathetic this morning to see this sportsman humiliate himself, humiliate himself to the core to try to keep his job."

"How does the much-ballyhooed 'yankee' freedom of expression look now," Cuban anchor Julita Osendi said in summary before moving on to the next item.

About 100 reporters, photographers and cameramen attended Guillen's news conference, a turnout to rival some late-season Marlins crowds in years gone by.

Guillen sat alone at the podium and began in Spanish, speaking without notes for several minutes before taking questions. Shortly after he started, his voice wavered mid-sentence. He paused to take a sip of water and clear his throat.

"This is the biggest mistake I've made so far in my life," Guillen said.

Guillen spoke in Spanish for about 80 percent of the news conference. Guillen said he was suspended without pay, but Samson later said the manager will be paid and will donate the money to Miami human-rights causes.

Forest insects and diseases arrive in US via imported plants

ScienceDaily (Apr. 9, 2012) ? The trade in live plants from around the world has become a major industry in the United States, with new imports now valued at more than $500 billion annually. According to a study conducted by researchers at UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, however, what has proved to be a boon for the economy has also been shown to have devastating effects on the environment.

The multidisciplinary working group found that almost 70 percent of the most damaging non-native forest insects and diseases currently afflicting U.S. forests arrived via imported live plants. The group's findings appear in the current issue of the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

The study, led by Andrew Liebhold, a Forest Service researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that in the last 43 years, the quantity of plant imports to the U.S. has risen by more than 500 percent, peaking at 3.15 billion plants in 2007. Nearly half of the imported live plants entering the U.S. are destined for either California or Florida.

Once introduced, some of these imported insects and disease organisms become established, and a fraction of those become major economic pests. For example, Sudden Oak Death, which is caused by the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, was introduced into the Bay Area and Big Sur regions of California via nursery plants. The disease has now spread through 14 counties in California, as well as southern Oregon, where it has caused large-scale die-off of tanoaks, live oaks, and black oaks.

The authors studied 82 high-impact invasive insects and diseases in detail. Of these, 95 percent of sap-feeding insects and 89 percent of foliage-feeding insects probably arrived on live plants. In contrast, roughly 85 percent of wood- and phloem-boring insects likely entered the country on wood packaging materials, logs, lumber, or other wood sources.

"The demand for live plants from outside the United States is not likely to diminish," said Liebhold. "As global trade expands, our knowledge of pest pathways must be improved to ensure trade is accomplished with minimal environmental degradation."

According to Liebhold, the working group's current research provides specific information that is critical to the development of policies to reduce the risk of pest species associated with the trade in live plants. Current policies are based on outdated assumptions about the size and number of shipments, and do not address the very large number of plants now grown abroad for direct resale in the U.S., he said.

The authors describe several possible means to increase bio-security, including intensified efforts at plant inspection stations; precautionary measures that restrict plants from entering the U.S. until they have been assessed as posing very little risk; expanding the post-entry quarantine currently applied mainly to some crop plants to include ornamental plants; developing better advance knowledge about pest insects and pathogens; and developing integrated systems approaches that depend on expanded partnerships between researchers and industry.

Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and ...

Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and PracticeEbook Free Download |?Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice | The authors of this tome have taken on the task of covering the field of cognitive radio, a complex field that spans from technical to regulatory issues that an engineer or interested party must learn in order to undertake participation in the field. The book is written in a very clear and lucid style, with a well organized layout that is conducive to flipping open the book to a section and quickly reading the definition. By way of example, if you are M-Ary PSK or Slotted Aloha or 802.22, you can quickly flip to that section and get a sufficient overview to sound intelligent in a conversation. However the book goes far deeper. Each chapter gives you depth on not just implementation, but also history of development and where things are going in the future. The book includes algorithms and problems to give a comprehensive education on the field of cognitive radio.
A brief warning--the book is not geared towards the financial person looking to learn about the field or the engineer just getting into wireless. It presumes you are an electrical engineer, with not only an understanding of wireless communication, but also an understanding of software defined radio. There are some introductory chapters, but the reader who will gain the most will be coming to this book with a strong knowledge base. Without that base, I imagine the book will still be useful, but only about 20% of it will make sense. With those thoughts in mind, I recommend the book to those looking to learn about cognitive radio, but the beginners to wireless should likely look elsewhere.
