Iraq on edge after raid fuels deadly Sunni unrest

By Patrick Markey and Suadad al-Salhy

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Gun battles between militants and Iraqi forces killed more than 20 people on Wednesday after a raid on a Sunni Muslim protest camp a day before ignited the fiercest clashes since U.S. troops left.

On Tuesday, troops stormed a camp where Sunni Muslims have protested for months against what they see as their marginalization under the Shi'ite-led government, a raid that prompted hardline Sunni tribal leaders to call for revolt.

More than 50 people were killed in ensuing clashes, which spread beyond the town of Hawija near Kirkuk, 170 km (100 miles) north of Baghdad, to other areas, reviving worries of a return to widespread intercommunal violence.

Sporadic battles continued on Wednesday and hardline tribal leaders warned that protests could turn into open rebellion.

Militants briefly took over a police station and an army base and burned a small Shi'ite mosque in Sulaiman Pek, 160 km (100 miles) north of Baghdad, before army helicopters drove gunmen out of the town.

At least 18 were killed, including 10 gunmen and five soldiers, officials said.

An ambush on an army convoy near Tikrit with roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades killed three more soldiers.

A surge in Sunni militant unrest has accompanied growing turmoil among the Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish parties that make up Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's power-sharing government.

A decade after the U.S.-led invasion, sectarian wounds are still raw in Iraq, where just a few a years ago violence between Shi'ite militias and Sunni Islamist insurgents killed tens of thousands of people.

Iraq last descended into widespread sectarian bloodshed in 2006-2007 after al Qaeda bombed the Shi'ite Askari shrine in Samarra, triggering a cycle of retaliation.

Thousands of Sunnis have been protesting since December, venting frustrations building up since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the empowerment of Iraq's Shi'ite majority through the ballot box.

"We are staying restrained so far, but if government forces keep targeting us, no one can know what will happen in the future, and things could spin out of control," said Abdul Aziz al-Faris, a tribal leader in Hawija.

The two main Shi'ite militias, Asaib al-Haq and Kataeb Hizbullah, appear to have stayed out of the latest violence. But former fighters said they could take up arms again if needed.

Maliki has set up a committee headed by a senior Sunni leader to investigate the violence at the Hawija camp, which left 23 people dead. He has promised to punish any excessive use of force and provide for victims' families.

The prime minister has offered some concessions to Sunni protesters, including proposed reforms to tough anti-terrorism laws, but most Sunni leaders say they will not be enough to appease the demonstrators.

The Shi'ite premier may also seek to consolidate his position before 2014 parliamentary elections by taking a tough stance against hardline Sunni Islamists.

That may be a risk which could further alienate Sunnis.

"What we are now likely to see in western Iraq is a deteriorating cycle of confrontation between the central government and protesters that will benefit extremist groups," said Crispin Hawes at Eurasia Group.

Iraq's Sunni community is deeply divided between moderates more keen to work within Maliki's government and those who see resistance as the only way to confront Baghdad.

"The Maliki government's aggression against our people in Hawija has forced us to take our uprising on another course," said Sheikh Qusai al-Zain, a protest leader in Anbar province.

"We call upon all tribes and armed groups to begin supporting our brothers in Hawija."

A simple solution to air pollution from wood-burning cookstoves

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Billions of people worldwide burn animal dung, crop residues, wood and charcoal to cook their meals. And the chemicals produced and inhaled sicken or kill millions. At particular risk are women who prepare their families' food and children 5-years-old or younger.

Up to now, most interventions have focused on improving the cookstove to lower emissions. And that would be fine, if there were enough improved cookstoves to go around. But there aren't. In 2012, only 2.5 million improved cookstoves were distributed, improving the household air pollution situation for exactly one-half of 1 percent of the world's biomass burners.

So an interdisciplinary team of Michigan Technological University students took a different tack. They decided to look for ways to improve the cooking environment, not just the stove. And they found a low-cost, highly effective way to reduce the impact of cooking over biomass fires without designing and installing high-tech, costly stoves.

Better ventilation.

The cookstove project was born in small town on the Guatemalan border with Mexico, where Michigan Tech environmental engineering graduate student Kelli Whelan was working on an Engineers Without Borders project. She noticed that the kitchen of a family who had built an attic to insulate their house from a hot aluminum roof was much cooler than others she had visited, although they all used the same kind of wood-burning cookstove.

"That made me wonder if the temperature difference helped clear the smoke out, either by a draft or the greater temperature differential between the fire and the surrounding space," she explains.

When she returned to Michigan Tech, Whelan and several fellow environmental engineering graduate students started work on a project to explore the situation. They built both a working model of a biomass cookstove and a computer model to test different kitchen and cooking conditions.

After receiving the EPA P3 grant, they surveyed Peace Corps Master's International and Pavlis Global Technological Leadership Institute students at Tech who had worked in countries where biomass-burning cookstoves are used. They also conducted more physical and computational model tests, 57 of them, testing for the presence and transport of particulate matter, carbon monoxide and carbon, as well as comparing wind speed, temperature, humidity, roofing materials, wall height, cookstove placement and windows and doors open or closed.

"Our focus was not on ventilation, but on trying to determine which factors really influence the air quality in a kitchen and which do not," said Whelan.

They discovered that ventilation is very important. "The improved cookstoves, which are supposed to reduce emissions, actually made the air quality worse under completely enclosed conditions," she said. "In contrast, we saw the greatest reduction in ambient particulate matter and carbon monoxide with an improved cookstove and with windows and doors open."

They also learned that not all ventilation helps. "Having two windows open on opposite ends of the kitchen was best, whereas having all the windows and doors open was worse," Whelan said. "This is because having all outlets open creates turbulence inside the kitchen, and the smoke is not forced out."

The Michigan Tech students took the results of their field and computer modeling analysis of cookstove air pollution to the EPA Sustainable Design Expo in Washington, DC, last week.

Daily Rituals

Given that I've now devoted two entries in this series to potables?coffee and alcohol?it seems only fair to take a moment to examine artists' eating habits.

Now, obviously, there are no great secrets of creativity to be found in the meals of great minds. Drinking more coffee can help you produce more work?and, certainly, avoiding alcohol during working hours is a wise strategy?but what you eat is pretty much irrelevant. Right?

Well ? That's what I assumed until I started looking through my Daily Rituals files more carefully. It turns out that there is one common eating habit, and it is simply not eating very much. Over and over, various artists mention that they work better on an empty stomach or after eating relatively little.

The pianist Glenn Gould, for instance, would only eat one meal a day?or, rather, since he preferred a nocturnal schedule, one meal a night. According to Kevin Bazzana's biography, Gould would visit a local all-night diner for scrambled eggs, salad, toast, juice, sherbet, and decaf coffee. Eating more frequently made him feel guilty, he said, although he snacked on arrowroot biscuits, Ritz crackers, tea, water, orange juice, and coffee throughout his waking hours. On recording days he didn?t eat at all; fasting, he said, makes the mind sharper.

Marcel Proust seemed to share this view. His longtime housekeeper Celeste served him coffee and one or two croissants after he woke in the late afternoon. This was sometimes Proust?s only sustenance for the entire day. ?It isn?t an exaggeration to say that he ate virtually nothing,? Celeste recalled in a memoir of her life with the author. ?I?ve never heard of anyone else living off two bowls of cafe? au lait and two croissants a day. And sometimes only one croissant!? (Unbeknownst to Celeste, Proust did sometimes dine at a restaurant on the evenings he went out, and there are reports that he ate huge quantities at these occasions.)

Gustav Mahler didn't skip meals, but he preferred food that was light, simple, thoroughly cooked, and minimally seasoned. ?Its purpose was to satisfy without tempting the appetite or causing any sensation of heaviness,? wrote his wife, Alma, to whom it seemed ?an invalid?s diet.? The filmmaker Ingmar Bergman favored similarly austere foods. ?He constantly eats the same lunch,? the actress Bibi Andersson remembered. ?It doesn?t change. It?s some kind of whipped sour milk, very fat, and strawberry jam, very sweet?a strange kind of baby food he eats with corn flakes.?

A number of other figures enjoyed a slightly more varied diet but still preferred to eat essentially the same thing every day. Oliver Sacks wrote a description of his routine for the book, noting that he almost always eats a large bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, a noon meal of herrings and black bread, and tabouli and sardines for dinner (or, if he has company, sushi). When she was staging The Artist Is Present at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Marina Abramovi? always ate lentils and rice?with no spices and not even salt?in the morning before the performance, and then had more lentils, a whole grain, a vegetable, and a light vegetable consomm? when she returned home afterward.

If all of this makes the life of the artist sound awfully repetitive and dull?well, that's sort of the point. For many artists, deciding what to eat is just one more distraction from the work. If you want to devote hours of intense focus to your art, something else in your life has got to take a backseat, and all too often it is lunch.

To boost your site traffic and optimize your site for search engines on how to start blogging, you absolutely must have unique, original and fresh content. This really helps websites that sell products that other websites offer. Traffic won't be generated because you won't rank high at all if you just copy other content. When you have unique and original product descriptions, your site will stand out in the search engines and lead you to higher rankings.

Ask well known and respected individuals in your niche to write articles or do interviews. Before you publish anything, be certain of getting permission. You don't want to suffer legal problems. After you have permission, write the articles from your interviews and submit to online directories. This can get you sales, credibility and more traffic.

Let your users post reviews. The real customer experiences will encourage new sales, and the new content will help drive traffic to your site.

Provide free gifts to go along with purchases of your services and/or products to help customers feel respected. Making customers feel good is often underrated among strategies for Affiliate marketing, so although including free gifts with orders may seem expensive, in the long run having repeat business and loyal customers will pay off.

One tip that everybody should follow is allowing users the option of buying items at wholesale or retail prices; depending on how much they decide to purchase. You will be able to make a profit with wholesale price selling, but this offers a great way to increase product sales.

A feedback box at the bottom of an ad copy can be implemented, allowing consumers to provide you with information as to why they chose not to purchase from you on that day. Their input is valuable because they will let you know if they weren't happy with your available products, your policies or if there was another problem they experienced.

If you have a knack for writing, try writing about your products and business and then submit your articles to websites and magazines. Include your website information along with all your business information. Urge them to give priority to publishing the articles you provide by giving them incentives and commissions.

Create a unique quality website and you will get more visitors. Post something unexpected, like an animated cartoon, a video presentation or a free offer to generate interest. Giving people items that they cannot find anywhere, but your site is a great way to market.

The tips you've just reviewed should give you an excellent idea of how to prepare your online marketing efforts. Effective Website marketing techniques allow your business to grow at a pace you are comfortable with.

3D printer makes tiniest human liver ever

Lab-grown livers have come a step closer to reality thanks to a 3D printer loaded with cells (see video above). Created by Organovo in San Diego, California, future versions of the system could produce chunks of liver for transplant.

The mini-livers that Organovo made are just half a millimetre deep and 4 millimetres across but can perform most functions of the real thing. To create them, a printer builds up about 20 layers of hepatocytes and stellate cells ? two major types of liver cell. Crucially, it also adds cells from the lining of blood vessels. These form a delicate mesh of channels that supply the liver cells with nutrients and oxygen, allowing the tissue to live for five days or longer. The cells come from spare tissue removed in operations and biopsies.

Existing liver assays, based on single or double layers of cells, only last two days and don't have the same range of functions as the micro-discs.

The realistic structure and functioning of the mini-livers make them good predictors of the toxicity of drugs and other substances. They produce albumin, the liver protein that bulks up blood and ferries hormones, salts and drugs throughout the body. They also make cholesterol, which carries fat in the bloodstream, and produce major detoxification enzymes, called cytochrome P450s, that metabolise drugs in the liver.

Organovo's ultimate goal is to create human-sized structures suitable for transplant; the big hurdle is being able to print larger branched networks of blood vessels to nourish such an organ. The company unveiled the mini-livers at the annual Experimental Biology conference this week in Boston.
