Family Guild of St. Teresa's School holds fundraiser to buy cleanup ...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - CASTLETON CORNERS - An outpouring of generosity and a natural willingness to help those less fortunate was the backdrop in Rossville for a post-Halloween fundraiser sponsored by the Family Guild of St. Teresa's School, and Party Jungle. The event raised over $1,000 for the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts on Staten Island.

The three-hour party attracted over 120 adults and children ? many of whom passed on their own traditional Halloween celebrations out of respect for those who lost their lives due to Hurricane Sandy.

Children of all ages came dressed in their costumes, played party games, danced and "trick-or-treated" courtesy of the school's Family Guild and the staff of Party Jungle.

Owner Kevin Borgersen was more than happy to oblige when guild member Christine LoPorto called and pitched her idea for the party/fund-raiser. Borgersen offered the use of the Sharrotts Road facility and his staff free of charge.

Face painting was available courtesy of Gail Mercuri of Party Smarty Entertainment, and the children received a special treat when Ralph Payson of the famed Stewart Avenue "Spooky House" and his family members arrived, dressed as monsters and ghouls, to add some authentic Halloween flair to the event.

The children enjoyed pizza from Bario's Pizzeria, home-made cupcakes, cakes, brownies, and other treats baked by guild members, as well as candy donated by Walgreens.

Proceeds from the suggested $5 admission fee were donated to purchase supplies, such as rakes, shovels, brooms, heavy-duty trash bags, and other supplies that will be used during the clean-up effort being organized by elected officials in the hurricane-affected areas ? which Borgersen and guild members will participate in on Saturday.

Organizers also collected dozens of bags of non-perishable foods, paper goods, baby supplies, such as diapers and wipes; clothing, shoes, towels, and winter coats for the victims who lost their homes and belongings.

All of those items were donated by party attendees and guild members, and will be dropped off at shelters, as well as other collection sites.

"The generosity and kindness we witnessed was overwhelming," said Tami DiCostanzo, president of the Family Guild, who called the event "uplifting."

"It was such an honor to be part of such an amazing group of people," she said.
