COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC)- The National Weather Service has canceled a tornado watch for Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties. The tornado warnings earlier issued for Dorchester and Colleton counties have been also been?canceled.
According to the NWS, earlier in the day, a possible tornado was reported by police in Islandton in Colleton County around 5:06 p.m. Chief Barry McRoy of the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department says crews responded to the 500 block of Jamison Dr. for damage due to the storm.
Emergency officials reported that a home had been destroyed in that area along with two other homes suffering damage. No injuries were reported.
Weather officials say houses near the area?were also damaged and power lines were reported down in that area with crews working to re-establish power to those affected.
Winds are expected to be very gusty today ahead of an approaching storms system. Winds are already breezy out of the southwest around 10 to 15 mph, but will get stronger by mid-day into the afternoon.
Winds should increase up to 15 to 25 with gusts approaching 40 to 45mph, especially on the bridges and elevated roads. Use extreme care if you are in a high profile or larger vehicle and hold on to that steering wheel.
A strong front is approaching from the west and storms will develop ahead of the system in a warm and unstable atmosphere. The gusty winds will bring plenty of moisture up from the south and that combined with the daytime heating will provide the fuel needed for storms to become severe at times.
Once the storms are off the coast late Friday night, we will see temperatures fall and clouds clearing into Saturday morning. Overnight temperatures will fall back into the mid to lower 40's. Plenty of sunshine returns for much of your weekend.
