Crave these by the pound? That's a clue you need more protein.

Back in 2007, Stanford University researchers put four diets head-to-head and noticed something odd: Certain women lost 30 pounds after a year on a given plan, while others?who were just as compliant?gained. They asked the same question you would: WTF?

After more research, experts believe they have the answer. "Genes may predict which people do better on which diet," says Randall Stafford, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine at Stanford, who worked on the study. Turns out we're each born with a specific type of metabolism?usually either one that burns fat efficiently but sucks at processing carbs, or one that rocks at handling starches and sweets but runs less efficiently on fats. "Choose a diet that matches your type, and you can lose twice as much weight," adds Mark Liponis, M.D., corporate medical director of Canyon Ranch Health Resorts.
