Tell us more about yourself, your site, and your family.
I am a 24 year-old graduate of the University of Kentucky where I majored in journalism. My daughter CeCe was a very happy surprise! She is 21 months old and a future gymnast with the energy level of a hummingbird. Her daddy, Matt, and I just bought our first home and are tackling a long list of DIY projects to make it our own.
I am the maternity editor for Lexington Family Magazine, where I run Baby Bump Lexington. I write articles about pregnancy, new baby tips, health trends, breastfeeding resources, do-it-yourself projects, product giveaways and more. My New Heartbeat is my personal blog where I write about my adventures as a first-time mom.
Why did you decide to start your site, My New Heartbeat?? How did you come up with the name?
In college I wrote a relationship column for the student newspaper called ?The Heartbeat.? When I became pregnant, my friends encouraged me to start blogging so they could all stay up-to-date on my pregnancy. Since I was leaving the wild life of college dating behind for good, I decided to incorporate my old column name to signify my huge life change.
I didn?t realize at the time what an outlet that blog would become for all my grievances and surprises about pregnancy and parenthood. I spent my last 10 weeks of pregnancy on bed rest, so my laptop was my best friend! The blog also inspired me to focus on maternity and baby issues as a journalist.
How did you balance being an editor at Baby Bump Lexington and being a mom? What advice can you both give to other working moms?
One amazing perk of my job is I?m able to work from home fairly often. I still drop CeCe off for daycare when I need to write, but I am able to stay flexible with my hours and pick her up on my own time.
The best advice I can give a working mom is to make the most of your mornings and evenings. Use the drive to school to sing together, play word games or talk to your kids. You are probably worn out from work after 5 o?clock, but carve out time to read to your kids, eat meals with them, tuck them in to bed. Planning special weekend activities together is wonderful, but making sure you stay present in their everyday routine is so important, even if it?s just for a few hours each day.
Your site has a list called, ?Our Favorite Bedtime Books?.? What are a few of your top favorites that you recommend?
My daughter loves anything written by Sandra Boynton, so ?Barnyard Dance? and ?Moo, Baa, LaLaLa? are wonderful baby shower gifts!
The best sentimental books in my opinion are ?I Love You As Much,? ?On the Night You Were Born,? and the classic tear-jerker for a parent, ?Love You Forever.?
What is your favorite part about being a mom?
Rediscovering small wonders. I feel I rushed through most of my days before I was a mom. Now that I have a toddler who is so intrigued by nature, sounds or textures, it makes me stop and appreciate these things too. Everything is new and fascinating to a child and that is a refreshing perspective to have on a bad day.
What are your favorite books, TV shows, movies, or magazines that help you relax after a long day?
I am a huge fan of ?Glee,? and ?Modern Family? is my favorite show on TV right now. I love that it shows how no family is really ?normal? and we?re all just figuring this out as we go! My guilty pleasure read is Cosmopolitan magazine and plenty of issues of pregnancy and parenting magazines for research!
